The wife wants me to pick out an ereader for my Christmas present. going back and forth between kindle and nook. got a couple questions about each. Kindle 3g- Is surfing the net over the 3g connection a pain in the ass? I'd like the capability, but if its a big pain then i'll just kill time surfing on my blackberry. And my public library website says that ebooks are coming soon, but the format (epub and pdf) isn't supported by kindle. Is there a way to convert the files? Thanks for your input. Nook 3g- it seems like you cannot surf the web at all over the 3g connection, it's only for downloading books from the B&N website. Do I have that right? |

Very limited browser... don't think it will replace your phone. |

Love my Kindle..Like others have said it is not like your computer or anything but it manages.
I live way out here in the country––and I still do just fine. There is nothing IMO that is better then the Kindle. I hear a lot of people have problems with the nook. |

The way I see it, there's no two ways about it. The kindle e-ink screen is better than the nook e-ink screen. The kindle is lighter and has much better battery life. It is the surperior e-reader.
Do you want to compromise on its ability as a reader so you can browse? |

I'm very interested to hear what people have to say about the ebook readers. I have been trying to decide between the Kindle 3 and the Nook Color. I like the color, the option to expand the memory, and a usable internet browser. However, I really like the battery life of the Kindle 3, but don't like that you can't expand the memory.
I will mostly be reading the gazillion pdf books and magazines I have. Does anyone here have the Nook Color and is able to offer insight on it? |

If you want a reader for every PDF you own, a netbook might be better depending on the size of your library. I don't use my Kindle to store documents, just to read them. Even if it only had a few megs of memory, it wouldn't make a difference. I read a book on the Kindle and then remove it. I can always re-download from Amazon, or copy a PDF back over. Av. Edit: as for Internet browser - I have Internet on my phone, on my Wii, on my laptop, on my desktop, and on my netbook. I really don't need another device with Internet. I can get to the Internet anywhere in my house or at work. |

PDFs on the kindle are so-so, at least on the smaller one. I would not want to read an entire book that way. Use Calibre to convert them. I have the entire Tom Clancy library on my Kindle converted from PDF. They read fine since Calibre converted them and e-mailed them to my Kindle e-mail. Av. |

I mostly have military field manuals in pdf, so they have drawing. |

I would go with a Nook Color and then Root it. Rooting is VERY easy and not very technical on the NC due to it automatically booting from it's SD card as the default. So all you do is download the root program, put it on your SD card and reset the Nook and voila you have a rooted NC. Which still does all your other nook stuff but you can then use it like an android tablet with a few limits.
read about it here:Nook Color |
