I want to make wood block to hold kitchen knives.

How would someone go about cutting the extremely thin holes in the wood to hold the knives

Well I found some plans online and was disappointed to find you basically glue two pieces together.

If anyone knows a different way, speak up!

Can't remember whats its called but there is a long drill bit with a Square chisel around for wood working. And use a drill press.

Mortising bit has the chisel part. Seen it on This Old House.

never seen one that wasn't 'butcher-block' style, from layered / built-up segments, sandwiching the blades.

Yeah. I was trying to avoid that and make it out of one piece of wood.

Mill the slots with a router in thinner wood. Laminate layers of wood into a block.

There are some tremendous deals at some of the big department stores on knives and blocks. I know this is the DIY forum, but.............that is the only other way.

A mortising bit is probably not going to get you there.
