We are going from a double basin kitchen sink to a single basin and I need to eliminate the fork in the drain line. The existing drain line appears to be brass/copper (appears cast and about 2" in diameter). I've never worked with that type of pipe and from what I see it looks like converting to PVC is better anyways. The pipe sticks out about 1.5" before the "Y". Is the correct fix to cut off the "Y" and attach PVC with a Fernco coupling? Am I on the right track, missing something or is this one to call a professional?

That's exactly how you tackle that.

Ok, thanks guys. I've only dealt with soldering smaller 1/2" pipes and didn't want to try it on this bigger line.

A FERNCO and some plastic pipe are your friend.
