Found out yesterday that I will be having arthoscopic(sic) surgery at the end of the month for a posterior cruciate ligament tear and a meniscus tear.....Any one had any experience with this type of surgery? i.e. Time down involved? Dr. said could be anywhere from 3 days to 4wks....
UPDATE 2/2... Said surgery plus a Laterial Release(realighning kneecap)...Walked a mile yesterday and doing the same today, but going to add some stairs to the mix... http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp357/exwildlandfire/knee1.jpg http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp357/exwildlandfire/knee2.jpg Before unwraping on Fri. eve and pulling drain.... http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp357/exwildlandfire/knee3.jpg http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp357/exwildlandfire/knee4.jpg Yesterday after walk... I already know that I have bird legs... |

It wasn't bad at all, all things considered. |

I had it done a couple years ago. Surgery is a piece of cake. After two days I was bearing weight and the next day trying to lightly walk on it. Three weeks later, with a cheap brace from Walgreens, I was elk hunting in the Rocky Mountains. It would be a little sore at the end of the day but I just took it easy. It took a good nine or ten months before I felt like it was 100% but never kept me from doing anything.
Good Luck |

I think they both went with regional (non-general) anesthetics combined with some Versed. They were both home the same day and recovered fairly quickly. I think that both of my parents were only in for the meniscal tears and not the PCL repairs so I'm not entirely sure what that will add for you. I'm sure someone here will have much better information that I will though. |

Dr. said could be anywhere from 3 days to 4wks.... I blew out my ACL and meniscus in college and needed complete reconstruction. I was on the couch/bed for about 3 days not doing a whole lot of walking. After my knee brace arrived I was able to start walking regularly. The worst part of the whole experience is the rehab where they have to stretch the tendons and ligaments so that you regain the full range of motion. Originally my doctor estimated 6 months before I was able to get out there and jog again, but I was able to do it within 3.5 months. I was back on the collegiate playing field within 9 months of having my surgery all told. |
I at it done about 8 years ago last week for a meniscus tear and to have the back of my knee cap shaved off
I was able to walk on it without crutches after maybe 3-4 days. I probably could have done it faster but I didn't want to push it. I was back to work at my highly physical job (UPS) in about 5 weeks, but it took a couple of months for me to be back to 100% now it is stronger than the "good" knee. I had a little soreness in the scar tissue of the upper incision for quite a while but it was more of an awareness that it was there more than pain. Do the physical therapy and put your all into it. It is where the difference is made in recovery time. 8 years later and I still don't have problems from the knee and the doc, who is one of the best in the area, said I had the worst 21 year old knee cap he had ever seen |

There's about a hundred different ways you can tear up a knee. Results vary with regards to recovery time. It just depends on the damage and the work they do in there. Good luck, go to the therapy if the doc prescribes it. It helps. (I've trashed both of mine). Listen to this man. If I had done everything the way I was told when I was 16 I wouldn't have had so many re-injuries on that same knee later. I've had ACL reconstruction on my R knee, and three scopes on it. The two scopes, like the one described in the OP weren't that bad. By the end of the first week everything is normal pretty much. Some pain, maybe some swelling here and there, but very manageable. Just do what the Doc says... verbatim. |

Back in the 90's I had an arthoscopy of my left knee after a loose body that had been rolling around in my knee sine high school zigged when it should have zagged and made a right old mess of my knee. The docs went in to see what had happened. They found a lot of shredded tissue, but little else. They basically cleaned up the tissues and withdrew. I watched live on TV as they did it. I was out on crutches later that day, walking on one crutch within a few days, and off the crutches completely within a week. The wounds required nothing but band-aids. Today, with few exceptions, that knee is better than my other one. Go figure. They never did figure out what had gone wrong. ![]() Regarding a more-involved surgery like yours, the recovery time will be more, but arthroscopic surgery has a pretty good track record fromall I've heard. Best of luck, and follow the Doc's orders. If he says rest three weeks, then DO IT. |

This in my opinion is the only way to go. You can be back on a bike and riding motocross with a complete acl reconstruction in 3 months.
Sanders Clinic And here is a link to TT that the doc is a mod on and you can ask him any question you want. I've got his home, cell, email ect. If I have a question he gets back to me in less than an hour. Thumper talk health and fitness forum I flew to Houston on sunday, surgery on monday, PT all week in hotel and clinic, flew home friday. Back to work on monday. Its not for the weak. No crutches, no braces. Insurance pays for hotel and flight. You can call and speak with doc's secretary and send insurance info and see if your covered. Let me know if I can help. He did my right acl recon and removed plate from my collar bone. I've had 3 acl recon's and this one in my opinion is the standard that others should go by. This is the day after surgery.

Timely topic for me. I'm sitting at my desk with an ice pack on my left knee. Had an MRI this morning. Having to straighten it out for the 30 minutes it took has caused alot of swelling. Get the results next Monday How did you like the MRI? Did you go in the tube or does your place have one of the new ones? |
|
It is a pretty simple surgery. I have had a few of them over the years and they were all a piece of cake. I actually walked out of the hospital on my own with no crutches once.
It is not a question of whether you can or can not walk afterwards but if you should. By all means, take it easy and keep it elevated to reduce the swelling. A couple of days of lounging around won't hurt. Also, take every bit of physical therapy you can. If you have some time before the surgery, start getting your quads in shape with some simple leg lifts and such. It will speed up the recovery. |

3 on my right knee and 1 on my left. They've made big progress from my first in the early 80's. Back then you had to stay in the hospital 4 days. Physical thearapy back then was a 5 gallon bucket with water in it doing lifts.
My last one 3rd. on the right a couple years back went very well. Doc said I'll probably end up with a replacement on the right. You'll be fine |

FYI PCL is MUCH worse than an ACL
I had mine done after a football injury. It took 10 months to get back to 80% of what it was before the accident. My procedure and physical therapy were done at TOSH, one of the best facilities in the world. in (SLC). Here they work on many athletes including the US ski and snowboard teams. I see you are in ID, not too far of a jaunt for you. Good luck. Fell free to Pm with any other questions. |

Its not too late to give him a call. Seriously get a copy of your MRI and contact Yvvonne his secretary and just get his thoughts. He is gonna tell you to get on a stationary bike right now I bet. At least 1 hour a day then after surgery 2 hours a day. Its all in the PT. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you my phone number if you have any questions. To me its much better having surgery there and sitting in a hotel doing your PT and having no distractions. I would rather put it off another week and go to Dr. Mark and be back months sooner than having surgery now and spending months on a couch and in a brace. Right before surgery Doc told me he would make my knee just as good as God made it and I believe it. Here is a pic of me about 10 minutes after I woke up from surgery.
This is me the day after also
This is me around the 3 month mark at Mt. Morris PA.

I had my ACL removed from my left knee back in 1982 (9yrs old) after I tore it at a playground. It turns out that knees aren't supposed to bend sideways.
It was scoped which was not very common back then. Still hasn't been replaced, so I have to be careful with my knee. |

Looks about like mine did. Did you get the ice water wrap thermos pump like device? It was the bast thing, next to the vicodin, for the pain. Keep active and good luck No ice pump, just a little spring loaded baffle type thing that I had to remove after 24 hrs...Been staying real active, maybe a little too much as I am really sore this afternoon and just gonna ice it....Maybe a hydrocodone, or just a few adult beverages...And have the wife make me a sammich... |

Good luck I had knee replacement after ripping up an MCL and getting shitty treatment at 3rd Marines BASon Kaneohe MCB Hawaii. I just kept humping packs, gear, radios, etc on it and letting it give out on me, running up unbelievable bar tabs, having sex with female tourists, making a nuisance of myself and getting suntans on Kailua beachfinally I had what they called a peaked (I think) femur. Basically my knee was screwed up but I had VERY strong sexy and very shapely legs.
You would want to kiss them if you saw them no foolin. Anyhow I found that bicycling was the best fixer upper for them. I did many hundreds if not thousands of hard core road bike rides. Becareful with clip on pedals/shoes. they suck if you go down hard and can't get out in time. Yeah that resulted in another surgery. Good luck I hope things go exceedingly well for you. And if you ever wanna see my legs just hollaaah!!!
