What's a good LCD monitor for around $200-250? It's for a server and doesn't get a lot of use. 1280x1024 would be fine. And are the 19" LCDs comparable to 19" CRTs? |
Agreed. The Mag 'Innovision' 15" lcd I picked up at Best Buy for $160 is a fantastic monitor, 1024x768, and at least equals the size of my 17" ViewSonic CRT. Jim |
Get a refresh rate faster the 21ms, and a contrast ratio above 500:1, and insist on DV-I interface. I'd recommend the Samsung Syncmaster 930B 19" (but those are $399). |
I just threw away my Mag Innovision 17" CRT yesterday. Bought it in 1994 for $850.  I didn't expect it would last 11 years.

I'd stay away from anything by a company you've never heard of. We've had poblems at work with "off-brand" lcd monitors. Most have some kind of major problem within a year. We've had several where a corner will "stick" and the image will not change. You see the corner of a Windows dialog box with the minimize/resize/close buttons for all eternity. We've had that happen on several monitors. Others developed "bends" at the edge, whee the image looked like it had "melted" downward about an inch, compressing the images there from what should be one inch to 1/16th of an inch. We had to replace 5 of 6 "B-Flat" monitors we bought within the year. That's the only brand I remember off-hand. We only buy Viewsonics now. They are a little more expensive, but not one has failed. |

I've got twin 19" monitors and I'm pretty happy with them. There's only a couple of manufacures of screens so you're often paying for the plastic and the name. A warning on quality though, some places will pick up the other's QC failures and sell them with either burned out (black) or locked on (white) pixels. Neither of my Hyundai's had a single bad pixel. Note that the screen will only look sharpest at it's native resolution. Also get one with a fast refresh rate if you watch video or play fast action games on it. PS: get one with both analog and digital DVI inputs so that it will have legs for your next computer's DVI output. |
I received the monitor. Not bad. One dead pixel (red pixel near top left is always on), so no return possible, but all and all it looks good. I will be fine for a server. |
