Arfcom Electricians and home DIY guys give me a hand here.

So I have an old standard beat to shit Porch Lantern light. The hole is allowing ants and other shit into my house. It is also dim and poorly placed so that the light is mostly above my peep hole and directed up and out.

My idea is to pull the light fixture, seal the hole and then put a house number plate over it. The house is brick so I would rather not deal with drilling another hole in the face of the house.

Plan I'm thinking about is using high output LED light strip along the Soffit over my porch, about 8 feet from porch floor to soffit. It would not be noticeable and would put out decent light while cleaning up the front of my house.

Anybody done it or is it a bad idea in general?

My neighbor has track lighting installed all along his front porch.  Lights the whole length up (40 feet or so), bright as day.  He's able to aim individual lights where he wants.  I think they're LED's.

You may not be able to ID someone on your porch as there will be light directly behind them shining into your face, making them a shadow.

Lighting would be coming straight down on them, but I see your point.

Hadn't thought about the dimmable option. Wonder if I could rig up a motion sensor that would bring the lights up from low ambient lighting to bright when someone came up on the porch.
