This thread is NOT a debate or bash thread, there's plenty of those elsewhere to post in if you feel the urge.

This thread is solely for the gathering of information regarding the interaction of our forum members and the police. Knowledge is power and is needed to create an informed opinion, obtaining that knowledge through open polling/input is the purpose of this thread.

To participate please post only the number of times you've had an official interaction with the police, whether it was in general a positive or negative experience, and any notable details that lead to the formation of the positive or negative experience.

Please keep the encounters concise and limited to only those you are personally involved in and the facts regarding them.

I suppose I'll go first, the majority of my encounters have been while driving, I expect most people have the same. Received only three tickets in all these encounters (not counting the one the judge tossed) and only one those was received during a negative encounter.

Eugene, OR (Positive): Was relearning how to drive (after several years of not driving) in a parking lot, cop wanted to make sure I wasn't doing "stunt driving." Was polite.

Cheasapeake, VA
(Positive): Forgot to turn on my headlights pulling out of a parking lot. Cop politely asked if I had been drinking.

Virginia Beach, VA
(Positive): Trying to get back to my ship before it departed (missing ship's movement), stopped for speeding. Cop was very professional and understanding of the situation.

Coburg, OR
(Negative): Police officer claimed the stop was for lack of headlights and then declared my temporary license was invalid and my expired license with active duty military ID was insufficient and after looking at my leave papers set the court date for a time when I would have been back in Virginia and criticized my wearing of my dress blues (had just come from a function). Cop was reproached publicly in court by the Judge for his actions and the issuance of a ticket for a non-crime (Oregon law at the time allowed expired license to remain valid if in conjunction with AD military ID).

Coburg, OR
(Positive): Stopped after picking up my friends to head out for the night as we superficially fit the description of some hoodlums causing trouble near by. After seeing we weren't them we had a very pleasant conversation.

Pendleton, OR
(Positive): Stopped for speeding on the interstate. Very courteous interaction.

*obtained my CCW permit around this time*

Conifer, CO
(Positive): Stopped for "evading." After explaining that his position following me was causing his headlights to blind me he apologized. Thanked me for informing him of my CCW permit.

Denver, CO
(Positive): First responder to a motorcycle crash, thanked for assistance in stabilizing casualty until paramedics arrived.

Aurora, CO
(Negative): Had three cops converge on me in response to MWAG call. The two male officers were polite and very clear in their instructions ("we wish to disarm you, would you please put your hands up"), female officer persisted in repeatedly berating me for open carrying and not using my CCW permit, refused to answer any questions and rudely threw my .mil ID back at me while remarking that she "didn't need that" (at the time my command has instructions that we were to present our .mil ID during any interactions with the police).

Westminster, CO
(Positive): Was slow in turning on headlights when leaving a gas station. Officer asked if I had been drinking and after had a conversation about carry pistol preferences.

Aurora, CO
(Positive): Stopped for speeding, very professional, thanked me for stopping in an area that would not pose a traffic hazard and then thanked me for obtaining my CCW permit.

Conifer, CO
(Positive): Stopped for speeding when coming down a steep incline, told that he did see my speed was fine at the top of the hill and my attempts to control my speed on the way down but wanted to make sure I was alright as there was a 25 mph town at the bottom of the grade. Responded that "it's okay, don't need to see that" in response to offering my CCW permit.

Aurora, CO
(Positive): Witness to another person's reckless driving that resulted in a collision. Thanked for getting the vehicles out of traffic and checking for injuries.

Aurora, CO
(Negative): Stopped for speeding. When I gave the officer my CCW permit I was ordered to keep my hands on the wheel "or this will end very badly." After being disarmed was repeatedly asked by the cop if I had "properly registered" my pistol despite CO state law expressly prohibiting any sort of firearm registration.

Greenwood Village, CO
(Positive): Rear-ended on highway. Thanked by responding cop for quickly clearing the involved vehicles from traffic lanes on the highway.

12 positive, 3 negative. 80% positive encounter rate.

Yes Sir/No Sir goes a long with the police in my area. I've never had a negative encounter with an overzealous police officer. If that day happens I just plan to keep my mouth shut until my lawyer arrives.

Good - Missed a stop sign trying to find my way through a poorly-marked detour. Officer was polite, just gave me a warning.
Bad - Had an officer illegally enter our apartment when my roommates were drinking underage. He did a search of the whole apartment without consent, then cited me for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, even though there were no minors present.
Good - Missing person in our neighborhood, police were checking the trunks of all cars leaving the subdivision. Polite enough.

But the question is, were those positive/negative experiences due to the officer's attitude and interaction, or simply because you got ticketed? The information I'm trying to gather is in relation to the interaction, not the outcome.

First memory was when I was about 9 years old, my mom was driving me to school and we got into a pretty bad car wreck. It was winter, and I was sitting in the back seat shivering my butt off.

One of the officers who responded to the wreck came up and covered me in his leather jacket to keep me warm while they sorted everything out.

Haven't had any negative encounters.

The one bad..

Buddy and I were working 2nd shift, get off at midnight. We're carpooling home on a completely empty 4 lane street when 4 cars race up behind us, all unmarked, all hit their lights. My friend was driving and pulled into the next parking lot. Tires screeching, doors slamming, 8 cops with their guns drawn start screaming at us to get out of the car.

They immediately cuffed us, patted us down, took our wallets. One goes to run our ID, a couple more start tossing the car. We're asking what's going on and all we get is, "shut your fucking mouths..".

Cop who took our wallets walks back hollering, "IT'S NOT THEM! IT'S NOT THEM!"

He throws our wallets and id's on the ground, they uncuff us and they all jump back in their cars and take off.

Me and Danny are just looking at each other... WTF just happened?

I hope whoever they were after drove their happy asses on by while all this was going on....

When I was in college a cop hit me up for what I assume was a bribe.  He said if I made a $100 donation to the local police department I could avoid the speeding ticket.  I figured that was cheaper than a ticket so I just paid it and left.

I wouldn't consider that a negative encounter though.

All positive.  Most of my interactions have been motor vehicle related.

Funniest interaction I've ever had was with a Texas State Trooper after getting pulled over for speeding.  Handed him my CHL and told him I was carrying.  He said "I'll make you a deal.  You don't show me yours, and I won't show you mine."

Sounded like a good deal to me.  I got a ticket, but I had earned it.  81 in a 70.

As an adult, all positive encounters, even when slapped with a ticket. Just because I didn't like it doesn't mean the officer/deputy wasn't professional and fair.

I marked 3/4 positive in the poll. Only reason being as a teenager growing up in a small town, the cops had a heavy hand and were generally dicks to you because you were a kid. No, I wasn't a trouble maker or a druggie either. Looking back, there was a lot of shitty stuff they were doing, and had I known my rights, it would have been different.

Mostly negative.

4 cuff and stuffs, 2 nights sleeping on a metal bed/bench

But the worst of it is having the dispatcher call your dad to tell him he might as well start his shift early and come get me.

I have had a couple of rude encounters.  One was two years ago by a Georgia deputy.  He was a bit of an ass despite my politeness.  Mind you I am an LEO and he knew it too....or at least I am pretty sure he saw my badge when I got my license out.  There goes that thin blue line.  Most of my encounters have been as pleasant as getting a ticket can be.

I drive ALOT and will admit I always go about 5 over the limit so get pulled once or twice a year it seems

90% are positive or benign

normally get cut loose with a warning once they realize they are not getting else out of their pretext stop
Did get a jackass trooper last year that decided he needed to do a half assed felony stop and terry frisk once I told him I was armed and had a permit

He didn't draw his weapon but ordered me out of the car with hands on top of my head and had me walk backwards to the sound of his voice

Had me puts hand on the trunk and he took my pistol and knife
Then had me get back in the vehicle pop my trunk and he put the knife and gun in there once stop was complete and told me not to go near the trunk until he was at least a mile away
Guess I looked shifty that day or something as the same trooper pulled me over a year ago and didn't seem to care I had a weapon

1) Driving home from college to see fiancee doing 75 in a 65. Got a written warning. Officer was very polite and so was I. (positive)

2) Driving home from fiancees house. Dropped a letter off for her mom in post office mailbox which is in the alley. 2:30am. Maybe later. Turn out head to head for home. Notice po-po watching a block away. Pull              over for "suspicious driving" could not articulate what exactly that entails. I was young and didnt argue. Pisses me off now. Cop was dickish not argressive though. (neutral)

3) Heading to doctors appointment. Driving through same town as 2). My car is fairly loud. I stop at 4 way and wait for SUV to go which turns South in front of me. I notice a cop pulling out of the convenience store on my left because he puts his lights on for a moment. It is really busy since school just let out. I then go through intersection behind SUV which is slowly accelerating. It is 330 and there are children everywhere. I am behind SUV about 4 blocks down from 4 way. Notice cop turn in behind me. He comes hauling ass up on me (Did I say there were kids all over?) Pulls me over and asks for my ID. I have it waiting and ask why I am being pulled over. He says give me you ID and then I will tell you. That just pisses me off. We butt heads for about 5-10 minutes and he finally tells me that I aggressively accelerated away from the stop sign and that he paced me at 65 in a 35. I told him apparently he doesnt know his ass from a hole in the ground because he was the one hauling ass trying to catch up and he wasnt behind me but maybe 20 feet before he pulled me over at which point I was doing 25. He runs my license, comes back and writes me a ticket for MR&P. I sign it he reaches for his clipboard but I set it down next to me in passenger seat and spend the next 5 minutes telling him how his father abused him as a child and many other non-CoC compliant things. Then hand him his clipboard back and tell him to go fuck himself with it. (negative)

4) Heading to work at 6am it had been pouring rain for the past several days. As I am heading south there is a large rock truck with overhead lights doing 30ish in a 65. I pass and notice its a DOT truck. Continue on and see a high water sign. Figure Ill see how deep it is and if not turn around (the next quickest route adds about 20 miles). Keep going until I see the high water. There is a cop on the other side with his lights on. Not really sure what he is doing. There is a van stalled out so I figure maybe thats it. I ease my nose into the water and see its almost up to my hood but the water isnt moving at all. My intakes sit really high up on my car so I figure I might as well try. Go through the water and around the stalled out van. Come out of the water on the other side and a FAT cop jumps out of his car red faced and waves me down. He then proceeds to tell me this road is closed. Which I respond that there are no signs out nor vehicles on the other side blocking it. He says 'dont you see those flashing lights back there?' (The DOT truck I passed about 4-5 miles back) I tell him they are driving and its not my job to guess what they are doing. He demands my license and comes back and says "I cant do anything now but I called the Hi-Po and they are going to revoke your license". I start dying laughing and proceed to tell him how fucking stupid he is if he expects me to believe that. I then tell him how exactly he and the others in his department should all go have an orgy together at a Krispy Kreme and drive to work. (negative)
