My daughter has lice , what do you guys reccomend? She can't go back to school until all the nits are gone. We have already found 2 louse and got them out, but the nits are deep. We are from the city, not used to anything like this, not saying city folk don't get lice, but since moving to WV, its apparently a regular thing up here, they check the kids for lice in school, otherwise we would never have known, had to take a day off work to take her to school only to be sent back home when they found more nits, my daughter is very upset because she is missing school.

this is messed up

city folk get this more than country folk.  this is a school thing. gets passed from student to student. think third world students. go to the drug store. there are several over the counter preps available just for this issue. the bedding needs to be stripped washed with bleach. the house needs to be vacuumed repeatedly.

good luck.

Thanks man, the wife went all vacume happy yesterday and used up a good amount of laundry detergent also

Drug store, lice shampoo, lice spray for bed, pillows, surrounding area, launder sheets, blankets and pillow cases with HOT water and lice shampoo, launder dolls if possible, or spray with lice spray. Also use lice spray around bed area if you have carpet. Get a nit comb and spend some time on her hair. Then spend some more time on it.

It's not a city or country thing, it's a kid thing. Most if not all schools check kids for this.

It's no big deal. Go to the pharmacy and get some Rid shampoo. It comes with a nit comb. Follow the directions. Problem solved.

Until or unless they are really having an epidemic and your daughter gets them again from another kid. It can take a while for the school to get a handle on it.

Good luck. It's really not a huge deal. They're just little bugs. When you get some out, look at them under a micro scope or a magnifying glass, with her to take the mystery out of it.

Oh, yeah and spray the bed, cloth toys, etc.

I've got three kids that get it from school all the time. We use this: Electric Lice Comb and some over the counter meds. Make sure to wash everything that can carry the lice otherwise it'll just come back.

Make sure you spray bug killer in the vacuum bag (if it has a bag) and get rid of it.

You ever see any cliche' jail scenes where they delouse prisoners?

Essentially the same thing. And, no, I wouldn't be likely to use it on an 8 year old....a dog however. The bag actually has instructions for fleas and ticks on animals.

It is the active ingredient in Carylderm shampoo used to combat head lice until infestation is eliminated.

Go to the doctor and get a PRESCRIPTION strength lice shampoo.  It has been a few years (thankfully) but we had to use a medication called OVID.

The OTC lice shampoos are inadequate- it is a dirty little secret that there are drug resistant lice populations in the US and abroad.

The cost of the OTC lice medications will quickly add up.  If you already have the OTC stuff then give the kid the prescription medicine and the rest of the family treats themselves with the OTC stuff.

You need to take the child's bedding, hats, stuffed animals, etc. and at the minimum put them through the dryer.  The hot dry air will kill the nits and lice.

As for getting the nits out you need to remove them on a daily basis.  Get an area that has good light (sunlight is best) and take your time.  Hours will be spent doing this and I don't envy you.

As a parent of school age kids I feel your pain.

Treat her with a lice-killing shampoo.
Use a fine toothed comb to comb her hair out.
Repeat all this in 1 week.  The life cycle on these little buggers is 10 days.
The shampoo will kill all the lice, and 80% of the eggs,(nits).  If you then repeat treatment in 7 days, no newly hatched louse will be mature enough to lay more eggs.
Don't trade combs, brushes, hair ribbons, barrettes, etc. with other girls at school.

As city kids, we never had lice.  However, once integration started and the poorer black kids came in, lice showed up with them.  Apparently hygiene wasn't very good among them (poor parenting?).  I'm glad I was out before that happened.

Don't sweat it.

It could be a non-issue.  The key is to be vigilant about nit removal.  The nits are essentially cemented to the shaft of the hair.  They are laid close to the scalp and as the hair grows the nit rides with it.

This means (no matter what) your child will have to be patient and sit there.  Your wife (assuming she has longer hair than you do) should also be checked and the whole family should use the OTC shampoo.

Hairbrushes and towels should be considered suspect- it is probably best to discard the hairbrush and make sure you do all of the towels in the house (no sitting laundry).

You are in for up to two weeks of combat.  It is the nature of the beast.

Lice combs are ok for separating out the hair but I found that you shouldn't rely on them to remove the nit- I used a pair of small scissors.  The best route is to clip the piece of hair off that has the nit attached once you spot one.

Cut her hair short(The word is already out at school) and treat. Remember that she is not allowed back at school because she can spread the lice. Once removed they can return if another student has them. At my sons school they have lice alerts and inspections.

I think it's more likely to have been coincidental. Black people in the U.S. have a lower likelihood of having head lice than white people. It has to do with the louse's "hands", having evolved in Europe to grip round hair shafts, not gripping the ovoid shaft of tightly curled hair well.  In Africa and Brazil, lice are more adapted and the infestation rates are higher among black people. Furthermore, lice prefer clean hair.

eta: OP, if she has long hair, it would be a good idea to braid it or somehow keep it from swinging around too much. When little girls play, their hair often touches and that can be a good way to get reinfected.

My daughter got them from school last year.  wife went washing shit crazy, as i'm sure yours already has, but we did the doc thing so let me save you some head ache.  The lice and nits live ONLY on human hair and can ONLY survive off it for about 8-12 hrs.  My wife washed basically every thing in the house that was fabric (stuffed animals, dog beds, blankets that hadn't been used in months, etc)  which was totally unnecessary.  You only need to worry about "de-lousing" stuff that's in contact with hair frequently (hats, pillows, pillocases and sheets, clothes that have been worn recently)  if there's anything that you can't wash that you're worried about, seal it in a garbage bag for 3 weeks.  if there's eggs on it and they hatch, if they can't get to a human, they die off.

do the chemicals wash. then you will have to go thru her head and look for the nits. Use a bright light while searching her whole head. You will have to pick them out by hand or comb.

been there and done that.

Tea tree oil shampoo.  It's a natural lice repellent.  I don't know if it kills them but it's good to use for maintenence and after they're gone.

Also, this has very high ratings.

Back in the late 80s I was the only one in my family who didn't get it.  They all said it was because of all the mousse, gel and hairspray I used at the time.    Having lice has nothing to do with hygiene as BES said––––-they prefer clean hair.

we put vinager in the kids hair, and let it sit for a min or two. that kills the nits. then put olive oil on their hair for 5 min. that kills the lice. then you have to pick out the dead nits. I also treate all the carpet in the house. we threw out pillows. stuffed animals. dress up cloths(we have girls) ect. you must declair war on the little bastards and leave no area unturned. we though we would get rid of them on the kids just to have them show up again. we tried all sorts of stuff. nothing worked untill we did the oil, vinager and took every thing out and traeted it or tossed it. good luck.

How badly do you want to rid yourselves of the lice?

Don't screw around with all that feel good bullshit, poison the little bastards, then clean the bedding and clothes she's been around, and hope it doesn't spread to the rest of the family.

She will need to keep herself separated from the kid(s) that are carrying the lice.  Chances are, the main vectors will always be vectors.

The life span of an adult louse on a host ranges up to 30 days. During this time, the female head louse can deposit about 90 eggs. After incubating for seven to 10 days, the nits hatch and, after another 10 days, mature into adult head lice and the cycle begins again. Off the host, adult head lice can live about two to four days at 74 degrees Fahrenheit (F) and one to two days at 86 degrees. Nits will remain alive off the host for up to 10 days; they will not hatch at or below room temperature (68 degrees F).

I appreciate all the replies

Well, we can't shave her head, she is an 8 year old girl with hair down to her butt, she is very particular about her hair, I asked if I could cut it off, she said NO and started crying , so thats out.

I shaved myself bald yesterday when I got home from work, used the lice shampoo on myself, I bought some tea tree oil, a gallon of olive oil, a small bottle of oil of oregano and I am picking up some vinegar later today, she has had 2 treatments of RID so far, we saw 3 lice in her hair 2 were caught and terminated, I was ot at home when the 3rd showed his little bastard face, the wife saw him and yelled "ewww" and did not want to touch it, I picked the other 2 out and monkey stomped thim outside on the deck, she will not touch them so I have to be the verminator.

After using the RID shampoo, we/I plucked out nits, then we shampooed her with oil of oregano, tea tree oil, we let that sit in her hair under a shower cap for about an hour then rinsed it out, then we dried her hair and her mother put more olive oil in her hair to sit over night, when I get home from work, I will begin digging again.

This is stressing my family out no doubt. My head feels funny, oh, I don't have no hair , my daughter has taken to rubbing and smacking my bald head, she laughs loud after an unsuspecting SLAP!

My daughter has really thick hair and she got lice several times in elementary. The quickest, easiest treatment was tea tree oil.
