Things could have so different if they would have just thought a little bit before sending poor Frodo off.

That was pretty good.  However, it would have been better if Gandalf said "hold my beer and watch this."

Funny.

But you forget the birds would have fight the nangouls(sp).

Damn... why didn't they just do that. They used those big-ass birds at least twince in the movie... could have been done with it.

Maybe instead of being just a dumb Americanski and just watching the movie instead of reading the book you'd know why doing that was impossable. There were several reasons why that not done.

I've thought about that before as well.

Uh-oh.

Looks like someone's LOTR geekishness is showing through.

I am a fully-fledged Tolkien geek and could easily explain to you why they couldn't just fly in and drop the ring.  However, I am also ashamed to admit that I am able to explain this; therefore, I am going to drink a beer and look at some internet porn instead.

Go for it.  It's not like your handle isn't a dead give away to begin with.

Besides, as you're avatarless I'm sure nobody will pay any attention.

Not if you know the sorce and purpose of the Eagles.  Its a whole  God sent last desperate help thing.  not a casual help thing.

LOTR geek mode off.

I've read the book many, MANY times, and I'm still not 100% convinced of why it wasn't possible.

Obviously, it needed to play out the way it did, in order for Tolkien to tell the story he wanted - but I'm not entirely sure I understand why it WASN'T possible.

So definitely impress me with your Geek-Fu and tell me why.

"God" used, because if you have not read the Silmarillion, the names will mean nothing.

The eagles answer to "God"  Not to man, or elf.  "God" decides that its time to help out more than just a guiding hand, he sends the Eagles.

Gandalf too.  Thats the answer to "why didn't Gandalf just shoot lightining out his ass?".
He is there to guide, and counsil while allowing Man free will.  Not dominate.

I have actually read the Silmarillon (several times) - but have trouble remembering it, because I found it so mind-numbingly boring.

I guess that IS technically an "explanation" but it just seems to me like a somewhat lame bootstrap plot device.  Sort of a "because" answer, that doesn't really make sense - because it's not supposed to make sense.
