Here's an article about the follow-on for the M249.  Big weight reduction compared to the current SAW, using plastic-cased ammo.  Caseless ammo is also in development for use down the road.

The company I work for is developing this.  Unfortunately, it's at another location and I can't talk them into sending me one for field evaluation.

The Caseless Telescoped (CL) cartridges (top), developed by Alliant TechSystems, use the propellant itself for the role of the “case,” which is fully consumed on firing.

woa.  I can't wait 'till the "micro-stamping will save us" anti-gun crowd finds out about this!

I think it's a cool concept. Personally, I've always thought we should have just used the Ultimax..

If they can achieve the weight savings and still have a good, if not better weapon than the current M-249 that will be awesome.  The only downside I see to this is that this new version will no longer have ammo compatability with the M-16/M-4, unless the bigwigs are looking at re-inventing them to use the new type ammo.

Yeah - it was a great read. Very exciting work! HMmmm - if you could send me a round, I would be very grateful. My dad has a decent collection of various rounds and I'd like to get him one. I can pay, of course. And it could be inert.

Thanks much!

This is the shit of the future. The AR will have to be replaced or upgraded at some point. Even the good ol' .30-06 was replaced by the .308.

How are they proposing to take care of the heat dissipation problems involved with not having a disposable heat sink with every cartridge?

ETA: Comprehension is a wonderful thing after being up all night. I see they're working on a composite sandwich.

Odds are that at this stage nothing is leaving the development facility.  I doubt I could even get in to look at it, since I don't have an official need to be there.
