Sharpening on the lightness channel in lab mode has the benefit of preventing the color fringing that can be exacerbated when sharpening in RGB mode. (The lightness channel does not contain any color information, just luminosity info) Consequently, you can sharpen more aggressively.

So away we go:

-open the image you want to sharpen

-convert to lab mode:


then go over to your channels tab and select the luminosity channel:


then apply your sharpening as you normally would, keeping in mind that you can be more aggressive than usual.

When done, change back to RGB mode in that same menu tree that you used to select Lab mode.

Here's an overdone before and after (not a great example....but this was shot with a 1D and L glass in raw so there's not much to do)

Good tip. That's the method I use when sharpening. Even have set up hot keys to swap between the modes.

No, for other breeds you need specific plugins.  Also, for black labs the channel you're looking for is darkness, not lightness
