I am wondering about a certain trait that Charlie the Tactical Dog has (He is a mutt that we found on the side of the road and adopted him into our home). He licks and licks and licks and licks. It does not bother me, but I was starting to wonder if this is a trait with Labs (which we believe he has some in him).

To those who own Labs or mutts with Lab in it, do yours also have this trait? I know my friend's dog is a German Shepherd/Black Lab mix and she goes nanners on the licking.

Oh, pics of the Tactical Dog

I and my good friend both have purebred labs. His a show breed and mine a field lab. Niether one exhibit's that trait. Sure they will lick you but not anywhere near like you described. Now chasing bunnie's THAT is a lab trait. Or flushing bird's even though not trained to due so. Mine would flush as soon as his first trip outdoor's. Now if I could just teach him to only flush right in front of me instead of in the next county.

I have not seen a single lab lick like you described.  Even with a 2 year old little girls face with fresh lunch on it.  A couple licks and she is done.  If you dont like it. Get a spray bottle with water in it and spray it as soon as it starts licking.  Not a shower, just a small spray.  Good luck.

He doesn't do it constantly, just when he starts licking he isn't going to stop until you tell him to stop.

The problem with water is that this dog loves it He will go outside and lay down in the rain.

not really. he'll clean his paws somewhat enthusiastically, but no constant licking

I have a lab mix (I would guess golden retriever ahead of lab for yours btw), and he likes to lick people a lot for sure. He will stop as soon as you tell him, but it makes him sad.

I think my lab needs prozac.  he gets scared of certain areas of my kitchen floor.  like he gets skittish if he has to walk over a certain spot on the floor.  for weeks at a time.  then he's fine for a few weeks, then it starts up again with another spot.  it's really a pain in the ass, because the recent spot he's chosen to be scared shitless of is right in front of the door he has to use to go outside.

I think i'll start my own thread.

Was it you who presented it to me?

He looks part Golden.

That's where the retard is coming from.

Labs eat a lot and may be a bit slow, but don't tend to be so creative in their idiocy.

My lab loves to lick and lick and lick, tirelessly. I thought he'd wise up to the peanut butter trick but he doesn't seem to.

Oh wait, that's not what you asked is it?

Moose loves the taste of himself. Yours has golden in it, I dont see any lab in there. Every lab I have ever been around was to smart for its own good, the goldens are where you see the retardation.

Salty is my lab/beagle mix, and at times she will absolutely lick you continuously until you make her stop. If she gets in my lap, or particularly first thing in the morning to wake me up, she'll just keep on licking and licking non-stop.

Love the dog, but she's a box of door knobs...I guess not all Labs are smart

She licks the wife because she lets her. Me I tell her to stop and she does.

He doesn't lick his butt constantly. He licks humans.

And stop it with the peanut butter stories lol.

oops, sorry.  thought you were being coy with the "licks and licks" bit.  if he's just licking people that's pretty normal.

Who is he licking? People or himself. I had a dog that would lick himself all the time. It bothered me because I hated the noises he made. All that grunting and groaning and slurping noises.

Champ,  a year and a half yellow lab with a touch of golden retriever

he licks you all day long if you let him.. VERY loving, VERY loyal dog..  i think in the back of my mind him licking me is a way to show his love..  ive trained him that licking is "giving kisses" and he knows "mommy " and "daddy"   when its bed time he lays on the bed with us for a short time,, and i will say "mommy kisses" and he'll lean over and lick my wifes face untill someone stops him..   and his tail is waggin the whole time

very happy dogs!   labs are one of the best all around breeds

My black lab Jack will be 3 in November and he does not lick at all. When I first read your post I thought you meant the dogs licking themselves, which yes my lab will lick himself a lot but he does not lick humans and never has. Which I'm very glad about I hate dogs that lick and especially the ones that do it a lot and won't stop.

My 3 year old chocolate lab/border collie mix doesn't lick hardly at all. She'll lick your arm or the bottom of your foot once or twice if she wants attention, but that's about it.

She will claw you half to death until you play with her though.
