I'll be visiting friends for a day or two. None of these replys paint a very good picture. These people f_ckin kidding, are you? I lived up there for over 10 years, before I move down below 5 years ago. I am still working in Palmdale, with ADP, aka Skunk Works. Thru out my travel with the company, I have been to some bad shithole in and out of US. Lancaster, CA Entertainment, not much to do, mostly residence, in some locations, large Section 8, aka gang territory, mainly East Lancaster. I used to live in West Lancaster. Food, not much, closest mall is 10 Ave West, Mall is in Palmdale, 10 to 15 minutes South. Food: Try Crazy Otto, amazing breakfast and lunch, Sat and Sunday, they have Prime Rib and Eggs. Fish and Chips, Yorkshire Place, on Ave K, North East of 14 exit, one of the best. In and Out Burger in Palmdale and Lancaster Shopping: Mall area is Rancho Vista and 10 Ave West, all the convience of moidern day shopping mall. Large theater there also. For entertainment, go South on 15 until you hit Santa Clarita, and there is where the urban life begins. Here are some fun stuff: Go North on Rosemont towards EAFB, they have a museum, and can be access with ID. THere is also Willow Springs, go there as spectator. In Palmdale is LA County Race Way, depending on the schedule, there are different type of legal drag race there. Shooting, actually makes most people envy, 15 minutes away from town. Only catch, need to know a friend (hope your friend is a member) that belongs to Desert Marksman. 4 Basic ranges, one all purpose combat with jungle walk, one 600 yard deep rifle range, one 150 yard deep blackpowder range, and one pistol range. Anything you wanted to shoot, up to 20mm, s long as it is legally owned. All members maintain safety when they shoot there, and no weapon inspection, and speed limit. Crime Stay away from East Lancaster and Palmdale, Section 8 territory, gang territory. Other than that, is a sub-urban just like anything else. Chicks Go South to LA, West side or the Beach, approximately 40 minutes away. Traffic: Good news, not much, except both Sheriff and CHP are out in force. Stay no more than 10 miles above posted speed limit. Warning: Rain storm coming in later next week, if it rains up there, in general, the intersection will flood. If it snows, the city shut down. |
| It is alot better than it was 10 years ago (like all the above posters who used to live here) Granted it is no Beverly Hills, there are bad areas, but this is CA after all. As Leungken stated, not alot to do. Try Katz and Jammers just off Lancaster Blvd for Breakfast, great food, great service. You have the mall in Palmdale, some dollar movie houses, a small outlet mall, driving range, some nearby golf courses, or you can drive an hour to MT. High and hit some of the fresh powder. Shoot me a PM, I live here in Lancaster and maybe we could do some shooting depending on when you'll be available (my daughter has a soccer playoff tourney next weekend so I'm booked then) |

Lancaster turned to shit after the Lancaster State Prison opened in 1993. What prison is here? There is a jail here for LASD, but they only now handle illegals, and they are way out on the west side. There is a prison in Cal city. http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/visitors/images/aerialShots/LAC_8x10.jpg California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC) 44750 60th Street West Lancaster, CA 93536-7620 (661) 729-2000 It is not a prison, It may have been, but is no longer. It is a detention facility used by LASD and INS where illegal immigrants are held and tried (all on premisis) and when ordered to be shipped out INS takes over from there. It is very quiet over there and there are not many inmates over there any more. Wayside and NCCF are way bigger than Mira Loma. Here is a link about it. Mira Loma |

Mira Loma Strange how it's still listed as being a California State Prison. http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/Visitors/Facilities/LAC.html In 2006 Lancaster State Prison converted half of its facilities to an inmate reception center. At any given time the prison's inmate population consists of a total of 4,467 inmates –– 1,897 maximum security, 391 minimum and 2,179 reception center. Even with that, from 1993 to 2006 the prison was a major factor in why the Lancaster / Palmdale area went to shit in such a short time. Before the prison opened Lancaster and Palmdale were where the greater Los Angeles firefighters, police/sheriffs/teachers were moving because it was cheap and the commute over the 14 was relatively pain free. When the families of the prisoners went to visit they found that it was cheaper to live there in the Antelope Valley area, when prisoners were released it was easy for them to stay in the area because of the growing drug "industry" (meth) / and the influx of gangs. |

Ive lived in that area for a long time and its basically like nothing really to do. I mean there is a mall movie theater and stuff. That is a prison. i personally know someone that worked there. There is another prison in california city about 30 or so miles away. If you are into dirtbiking, that area has some good endless trails. Go to california city/mojave and you can basically ride where ever you want. Edwards Airforce is nearby Willow Springs. Someone mentioned LA County Race Way, LACR was closed. I was there on the last night there were races. IDK tho they may have opend it back up. Check out black angus for food. Good filet mignon. no hells angels in lancaster. |

DM is a private club, membership fee is $40 for one time initiation, and $60 a year, for unlimited access.
Shoot from dawn to 12:00am midnight. Zone X for hunting during hunting season. Located at Angeles Crest National Forest. Do you know where was Kentucky Canyon shooting range, keep driving deeper, there is DM. Members have the lock code for access, Kentucky Canyon have been closed for a while. Must be an NRA memeber to join. You can bring up to 3 guests, 3 visit a year for each guest, but nobody is checking. In general, members can carry hot, guests are to carry cold, LE/Mil can carry hot. Generally a bunch of good guys up there, except a-hole from Santa Fe gun gallery, who he think he own the range. There is no offical range master except during matches, which are on the weekends. Whoever is at the range first is the "Range Master". Only limitation, if you want to play with claybirds, must retreive all the pieces after you break them. Wild bores there love to eat claybirds, and will kill them. Don't like to clean up a rotting wild bore off the range. Rules are, you can shoot anything, at any speed, as long as you are safe. Mag dumps are fine, as long as you can control your rounds. Most guests and fudd type cannot understand the no speed limit rules, but then, as said, they are fudds. At the end of the rifle range, 640 yards, are two metal gongs, good initial long range practice. I used to shoot 28 inch pepper popper a 600 yards points with my Styer SSG. Lots of fun and good precision marksmanship practice. Rifle range have shadd area with bench (which I never use), there is also a prone area (which I use). Combat range, east of rifle range, includes an open 100 yards X 50 yard area and a jungle walk, which you can hide targets within /among the trees. Obviously, I use the rifle and combat range 99.9% of the time. Pistol range have fixed target position at 25 and 50 yards, want anything closer, bring your own. Shaded area and bench, never do use that. Black powder range is anything but rifle, including shotgun with slugs. Shaded and bench. I used to be range master for Defensive Pistol and combat rifle. Once a year, combat rifle shooots a night match event and one 1,000 yard assault event. Love the range, but ever since I moved down below, I have been shooting matches down here instead of at DM, just too long to drive for me. Here is their link: Desert Marksman RPC I work up in Palmdale, maybe a mini North LA County ARFCOM get together? |

Stupid thing is, the ricers races on the street nearby, which is illegal, where-as, they can race legally at LACR. |

Skip it. I last went through in July 2009. It has gone from being a military desert base area to where you flush the toilet in Los Angeles. Did you went thru Rosemont, or Lancaster? Rosemont is typical military desert base, Lancaster/Palmdale is more contractor. AF flight test center is maintained and run by the contractors, not USAF. |

I vaguely remember where Kentucky was, It's been a very, very long time since I was there. And I'll agree with you about the guy from Santa Fe, I've never shot with him but been in the shop once and will never go back. I'm game for an arfcom get together, sounds like fun. You say they have boars there? I have never seen boars or sign of them over on that side until you go waaaaay further east. Sounds like I may have to do some more scouting and also look into becoming a member of the range. Thanks for the info. |

So, if you are coming anytime soon you can do the following (depending on the season):
Wrightwood to snow-ski - 1 hour southeast Pyramid Lake to water-ski - 1 hour west Lone Pine/Death Valley - 3 hours north Off-road/Motorcycle riding - 1 hour north or 40 minutes west Shooting - There is a public, BLM shooting area up near Rosamond Racing - Willowsprings (as mentioned) Zoo - Exotic Feline Breeding Compound (near Willowsprings) Beach - 1.5 hours south Fishing - Many lakes within 1 hour Chasing tumbleweeds - Out your friend's backdoor Have a blast!! They do have a mountain Lion up there a few years ago, deer, and lots of rattlers, killed several up there, actually have a funny story about the one I killed during a tactical shotgun match I roganized. IM me when you want to get together, and maybe get a few more ARCOM members. After work will be best for me, which is after 17:00. Several good places to meet at the restaurant role near the mall, or smoke a vigar at Starbucks on Rancho Vista (Ave. P). |
