Picked up a bottle of Laphroaig 10-year-old single malt yesterday, and had a little while watching TWD last night.  Wow, very unique flavor.  I could see how it could be off-putting to some, but I like it.

People are always talking about different flavors in wines and spirits, and mostly I think they are BS, but if you can't taste the peat and smoke in this whisky, you're hopeless.

any one else a fan?

My bottle of Laphroaig is going to last a really long time. I don't see the pleasure in burping up what tastes like burnt bandaids 3 hour later.

Nasty stuff.

I go for the poor boy equivalent, Finlaggan. $19 at Trader Joes instead of $41.

I love it and most islays.
For $20 you can get a bottle of Black Bottle Scotch that is a blend of Islays.
It is pretty damn good.

It's not bad had some at a bar that for some reason was better than the bottle I purchased for home consumption.   Think there might be different versions in the same year.

My preference tends to be Sherry casks it seems.

Macallan
Glenfiddich
Glenmorganie
Highland Park

Hmm was another I had around Christmas that was quite good....damn cant recall ah well.

I have a bottle of the Quarter Cask, but have not tried the ten-year-old.

Ardbeg ten-year-old is quite nice, too.

Lagavulin sixteen-year-old is also excellent, and for a distinct change try Bunnahabhain twelve-year-old.

Fresh.   People say band aids because that is easy to identify.
The taste/smell is from iodine.

It's a "sherry monster". It's also cask strength, so it's best with just a few drops of water.

I put Lagavulan in the same category.  You REALLY need to be in the mood for a high power single malt, but I do love them both.

I'm currently on a McCallan kick.  That light blue botlle calls my name every weekend.  Smooth as silk and not nearly as smoky/peatey

I know a lot of people that prefer the 10 year to any of the other Laphroaig offerings...including me.  Definitely steer clear of the Laphroaig Select.

It isn't my #1 Islay scotch (pronounced eye-la in case you're wondering), but it's hands-down my go-to...it's a lot more reasonably priced here compared to Lagavulin 16.

Laphroaig's advertising campaign is hilarious and honest...they've totally embraced the love-it-or-hate-it attitudes, and they show the good and bad reactions to it.

Amazing with BBQ or a cigar. One of my favorite brand of scotch. But I have to be in the mood for the smoky flavor. It is one of the things I love about scotch. Like wine or beer, different brands/kinds are better for different meals or moods.

Laphroaig is for  the good times that is for sure, the 18 is quiet nice.  However the ten year old or quarter cask are also great.  From an electricians view it smells like burned bakelight. Usually I drink it when barbecuing, or after a good day or for celebrating.  Arderg or Lagavulin are equally good with the latter having the greatest body at least to me.

After bad days there is always cheap scotch or wild turkey, no need to waste great scotch on a bad day.

It is an island region( but islands are not a recognized region so they fall under west highlands).
Islay is one specific island.  And they love peat. It was one of, if not their only, fuel source for fire.

I love peaty charcoal scotch. I normally only have one glass with just a dash of water to open it up when i get home after a tough day.  The nice thing about those types of scotches is that its so pungent that you get the pleasure without having the urge to have like 4.
