I need/want to retrieve some of the data that was on an old HD. Are  the external enclosures idiot proof? I have seen them on Newegg and think that is what I am looking for.

Can the average+ computer skilled propguy do this or should I bring it to the comp. store?

Easy enough, some companies are selling docking stations that you just pop the hard drive in now.www.thermaltakeusa.com/Products.aspx?C=1346

Newegg also sells ide-usb converters, so that's something else you could try.  Would be a lot cheaper than going to the store.

if you can get the hard drive out of the computer and you can screw a box together, then you can do it. its the easiest way to go and will wave you some money...

I picked up one of these last year at the recommendation of ARFcom.

The laptop hard drive the monkeys at CompUSA was unreadable was downloaded to my desktop 10 minutes after opening the package.  It's a great tool to have around.

I use external HDs all the time but I haven't used one for a laptop drive yet.  They look like thy work the same.  Put the drive in the box, plug it into box, plug box to computer, it shows up as another HD on your comp.
