Looking for a laptop in the 500-750 range.   This is for Mrs. TRM and no, she does not need a lot of horse power (the most intensive application she uses is MS Publisher).  It's been a while since I've shopped for non-Mac laptops, so I'm a bit rusty on brands (last "PC" laptop I purchased was an old-school IBM thinkpad T40p).

Caveat is that I need the laptop Saturday. (both laptops at officedepot are instock at my local store and I have to tack on 8.25% sales tax if purchased locally).   I do have Amazon Prime, so Saturday delivery is nominal.

Thanks for the help guys.

/Yes, I have to stay with the 15-16" screen due to her vision and weight restrictions on items she can lift (she has a bad back).  The number pad is also a requirement as well as the webcam and dvd/cd burner.

I'd get this Acer.

Without a doubt, the Asus.

You fail at hotlinking. Good luck with your poll. I am too lazy to copy and paste. FWIW... I got a Vaio last month and love it. It was around $800.

Yeah I second this.

Stay FAR away from that HP, and DON'T but an Acer for shits sake.

Just get a Thinkpad R or T series.

You fail at not using a browser that makes links hotlinks automatically.

I'm very happy with my 17" HP and it isn't heavy at all.  My 15.6 dell weighs more I believe, and my 15" toughbook weighed WAY more.

HP has a numpad and a webcam/mic

Yeah, but it's a TOUGHBOOK. Bad ass.

No time to get one through a retailer that has them in stock.  The machine I had back-orded got further delayed and the wife-unit needs a machine asap for a business trip.

Didn't hotlink as I'm used to not doing so on this particular forum (for url_redirect logging on their particular web hosting platform).

I really like the Asus ADW+2 Year warranty deal.   However, the MSI has some really nice specs.

No, they're overrated.  Unless you are using the laptop in the field, and by field I mean outdoors working, not sitting on a plane or something, then they can be a pain in the ass and cost way more than a comparable non-hardened system.

I have dropped my toughbook from about 3' while turned on, and it just gouged the frame a little, but their screens are a weak link as are all of the little plastic flaps covering the ports if you need to use them often as they will break.  Make sure you dont leave the stylus on the keyboard when you close the lid either, lots of our guys have learned that the hard way.
