Wally world has refurbished Everex laptops at what seems to be a good price. I was looking at: 1.7 ghz celeron M proc 390. Dual layer dvd burner. 512 meg ram. 15.4" display 1280 * 800. 60 gig HD. Win XP. Price $478.00 Anyone have experience with Everex? What say the hivemind? I know it won't be good for Quake 4. Thanks. |
You get what you pay for. If you;re looking for POS laptop that you can live without when it craps out... you found it. If you're looking for something you can rely on, get an IBM. It costs more, but there is a good reason for that. |

I assume that you're speaking of this creature. This 512mb of RAM is not going to cut it, you need at least 1GB to hack it with XP if you do any sort of multi-tasking or don't wish to wait 5 minutes for a startup. The laptop has 2 SDRAM slots which means that it will come with 2 256mb chips, 1 plugged into each slot. If you decide to purchase this you will need to also buy 2 512mb chips, 1 for each SDRAM slot in your laptop. From the information on wally world's webpage I cannot tell what kind of RAM specifically you would need so I would take the thing into your nearest Frys or CompUSA and get them to help you out with getting some more RAM. I would let them put it in for you as well if your hardware fu is weak because you can cook your board in a hurry if you don't know what you're doing. That RAM will probably run you 150-200 bucks at roughly 80 bucks a chip. It is usually cheaper to buy a laptop with more RAM than upgrade later on. Everything else looks good for what you want to do. I don't know what kind of games you want to play, but don't expect them to work wonders with this setup-especially if you don't upgrade the RAM. This dell laptop looks like a good bang for the buck if you want to shell out a little more green. Dell customer support is typically pretty good too if you ever have a problem, which Everex probably cannot provide you being a no-name and/or small and/or foreign based company. |

Well, I took heed of the hive mind and did not get the everwhat. I went to staples and got: Compaq Presario V6210US $629.98. $30.00 rebate will bring it down to $599.98. Well the day after I got the Compaq I decided to burn the recovery disks for it. I went through a 3 pack of dual layer DVD's and 2 single layer DVD's, they all became coasters. I was not at all happy. Took the thing back to Staples for a refund. First time I ever returned a computer. Went to Walmart. Got an Acer Aspire 5610 15.4" Laptop w/ Intel Pentium M Duo T2060 Processor. $698.00. When I got it home the first thing I did was burn recovery disks for it, although this thing comes with some sort of Vista disk. The disks burned fine. This is a new laptop that the Walmart just got and I must say for the extra 100 bucks over the Compaq it sure do pack a lot more punch. Intel Pentium M Duo T2060 processor (1.6GHz). 1GB DDR2 533 Mhz memory (Upgrade to 4GB). 8X DVD Super-Multi Optical drive (Dual Layer Burner). 120GB Hard Disk Drive. 4 USB ports. Built in camera (1.3 Mega pixel). I broke in the display watching some "Band Of Brothers". This puppy smokes the Compaq. I know it ain't an IBM/Lenova but money is tight in the Paradise household. I'll be using it a lot in the coming days and provide a follow up review. |
