So my laptop is no longer charging.  It's a 2 or 3 year old Toshiba and the ac adaptor box that is usually warm or even hot when plugged in is not warm at all and the computer does not recognize that it is plugged in.  This happened to my wife's compaq a couple years ago but we ignored it because she has a work laptop.  What should I do?

I would start with a test to see if the power cable /AC adaptor output is what it should be.
If it is then it might be time for a new battery.
Will it run on AC power without the battery?
Does the battery hold a charge at all?

ETA: for clarity

Buy a new AC adapter, you can find generic ones that don't cost much.

The battery life was never stellar even when new.  But it can run without the charger plugged in.  Says it has ~20 minutes of battery life left.

It will not turn on without the battery.

Possibly the power connector in the laptop has failed.  Broken solder joint.

If not that, then the power supply is the likely suspect.

I recommend the Targus stuff. It has not let me down ever. Posted from a Toshiba Satellite.

Get a cheapo laptop charger off eBay.  Or make sure the AC line is securely seated in the Toshiba's power brick.  I see this often with Toshiba laptops.

With my wife's you would have to jiggle the cord or hold it in a certain position to work until it didn't work at all.  Think is was the connection in the computer that failed?  Mine just quit working immediately.

If the "box with the cord" (your power supply) isn't warm, then it's done. Make sure of the obvious stuff like the breaker on the outlet not being tripped and the like.

After that, you can find a cheap one on Amazon, or a spendy one at your local box store, if you're lucky. My local Best Buy and the like didn't carry them.

Sometimes laptops get hung up and will not start or take a charge.  Remove the battery, let sit for about 5 minutes, put the battery back in then plug the charger back in.

I checked the ac line.  It is gtg.  Going to try the charger from my wife's old laptop.

Which model Satellite? I might have a spare one around here that you could have.

Don't use the charger from your wifes old laptop unless it's the same voltage/amps.

Wife's HP charger is too wide for my Toshiba.
