It all depends on what else she might use it for besides schoolwork. Get somehtign with WiFi (builtin) a decent screen, a lot of ram and a decent CPU, go for longer battery life, and try to get a thin and light one. They arent very upgradeable, so get the best you want to spend money on so its not obsolete so soon.

ETA: Pentium 4, or AMD 2800+ min cpu , at least 512 MB RAM, and any built in wireless B/G will be good.

For going on the cheap
at least 1gig processor
512 ram
good word processing software
added bonus
docking station so she can lock up while away at class which saves on the constant plugging and unplugging of the cables.
The sky's the limit but what she really needs and what she thinks she needs are not always the same.

Been through this sending one daughter off to college this year, and a son next year.

Not everyone needs a Pentium... you can save some money on the Celeron processors.

You can get some nice packages with "3 in 1" printer/copier/scanners, which is a necessity.

Yes on the wireless.

The son wanted a desktop so he could hotrod it with gamer hardware... but he is not going there for playing games.  He sees now that a desktop is not practical in small dorm rooms.  Plus carrying it to the library, taking it home, etc.

I got my daugher a middle level HP, 512 mb RAM, I think 2.3 Ghz Celeron.  She is happy with it.

That's what I am posting on right now... so +1 I guess.

Also, ignore surplus laptops, the truly arent worth the trouble, and you will never get the value out of them that you pay for.  A 400mhz laptop isn't WORTH $100 much less any more.

Dell sale of the week
in that order...  IBM is better, Dell is cheaper, and has decent cust service [buy the extended warranty no matter what.]
