I kind of expected a sticky about this but maybe I am the only numb nuts that gets on his gun forum to ask questions about learning to fly

I would like someone to educate me on the approximate time involved in learning and the money that would be spent in order to learn to fly.  Also, what is a plane that a beginner would buy (or alternate types of ownership since I know you can buy fractional ownership or rent), what's the flying radius, how many people would it hold, what are the costs other than buying the plane and fuel that should be taken into consideration before purchasing a plane, etc.  At this point I am less than a laymen and I am trying to learn enough so that I know the questions to ask and where to find the answers.  Thanks in advance.

In case you care, the reason I am asking is because my wife loves to travel and I think that it would be fun to tie in a hobby for myself (maybe two since bringing my guns would be a bit easier ).  My dad learned to fly when I was a kid but I am assuming that any info that he could provide would be out dated.  I have a cousin that learned to fly but he learned for free by interning at a company that had private corporate planes and the pilot taught him as long as he helped with maintenance and upkeep on the planes.  The only other person I know personally who flies has more money than god and there isn't a chance he would have a clue what it would cost because his corporate pilot trained him and the planes that he owns are slightly more expensive than, well, everything that I own (it takes a big plane to get your family and friends to your homes in Ireland and the Bahamas).  So, here I am asking  you guys.

I'm just getting started in the private pilot process...so I'll leave your questions to those more experienced.

I will offer one piece of advice that helped me:

www.google.com > search for becoming a private pilot and any derivatives > read EVERYTHING you can about it!

Doing this in addition to asking questions here (like you have) have helped me loads.

I agree; this should be a sticky. There was a fairly recent thread on this:
