Well, it seemed a long way away at the time when I first walked into my recruiter almost a year ago, but finally I'm starting my career in the U.S. Army.
Yes, it's taken me damn near a year now to get this show on the road, having not graduated high school at the time when I decided to go see a recruiter definitely set me back. The Army helped me out with that though, and in August I joined the Army DEP and got to work on my diploma, which I finished a couple weeks ago. So since then I've been just counting down the days to my ship date, and finally it's on the doorstep.
I leave for Ft. Sill, OK Wednesday morning and have been pretty busy getting things together at home before I go, so I thought I'd check in a time or two more before I go. I appreciate the advice and support I've gotten from everyone here on the military life, and I'll check in when I come home for X-mas!

Haha!  Have fun.  I went to Basic at Ft. Sill in '96, and that place sucks.  Don't take it too seriously, just do what the Drill Sergeants tell you to do, and you will be fine.

Trust me, I've heard plenty ;)
I'm pretty good at taking shit, so I'll just STFU and do what they say and get it over with.

That won't really do anything so bad, its all mind games.  The yelling and screaming, its kind of funny once you get over it.  You know thoses drills laugh their asses off when not around you, but you will still probably hate you.

Never be the first or last to volunteer, be in the middle.

Chris,

Congradulations on your accomplishment.  The fact that you took the steps necessary to complete your Diploma shows drive and discipline, 2 traits that will serve you well in the Army.  Good luck in Basic and the start of your Army experience.

Remember these words of advise:

Good luck on your journey

Good luck and THANK YOU.

Now basic is a mind game.  If you let the Drill Sgt get to you they win.  Realize this and your are ahead of the game.  Pay attention and do what you are told without hesitation or question.

DevilDog,

No, that's AF basic.  Army basic has been extended to include the "touchy-feely-I'm ok, you're ok" classes.  He'll be done next week.  Of course, if he were a LeatherNeck, he'd still have several months to go.  That's because it takes them that long to teach the average Marine how to march without dragging his knuckles on the ground.
