Saw the thread about Google+ and Facebook and it got me thinking. I didnt what to highjack that thread but I was curious if others have any luck with LinkedIn?

So I have had an account for a few years and never did much with it. I thought it was a waste. I finally took some advise and started joining the "groups" in my industry. HOLY CRAP!!! There are so many deals that are going on through that website its crazy. A lot of the "under the radar" type stuff that are real money makers. It went from an annoying email every now and then to something I check several times daily to get the latest scoop on whats going on. Anyone else had any success with it?

I don't know about deals, but it is a way to not burn bridges when you graduate, leave a company, etc....

My linkedin connections are just one big sausage fest.

Guess I'm still in a male dominated industry.

I get about 2 job offers a month via LinkedIn  - that's offers, not interview requests.

I use it as a professional networking tool but you'll find some people who live on it like its Facebook.

well there is a high demand in the fast food and janitorial industry

eta: to be serious, it's a great place to network especially if you're looking for a job - bunch of 3rd party and corporate recruiters on it.

The website reeks of cellphone belt holsters.

Yeah I dont know about "deals" but I used it a lot in my recent period of unemployment and for working with recruiters and getting company information where I was interviewing.

I know they also used it on me as well so standard precautions apply.

Only use it as a professional contact and networking tool so I'm not sure what else it's good for...

I check my account daily.  I use it to keep up on work-appropriate topics via their groups, comment/share articles that I think are relevant to my connections, and to stay open to job opportunities.

Facebook is for family/friends.

So you're one of the guys that make that site useless.  In 2006 when I joined, it was very useful to connect with former coworkers.  Now, all of my updates are just spam from recruiters.

Depending on your field of work, it can be quite useful.  Even if you don't connect to anyone, it's still a great source for info on companies and their employees.  For example, if you're looking to send a resume to a company, you can tell if you know anyone (or if you know anyone that knows anyone) at the company.  You can also tell what type of people they have hired in the past, how long they have stayed there, etc.

I'd say join, fill out a profile, and get in some groups that interest you.  The only downside is that it's another Google hit on you.  Just keep it completely professional, with only business information.

What is the deal with that?  It's like a badge of corporate slavery.
