Hello,
Hopefully there is a Linux guru here that can answer this newbies question. I
am attempting to setup my first Linux machine using 32 bit Linux Mint Xfce.
Problem is the laptop keeps getting hung up while trying to boot from the live
CD.
I am trying to install on an old Dell Inspiron 2650, so there is not an option to
boot from a USB and I am using a DVD. I am planning on having Linux as the only
OS. I have verified the boot disk works on two other laptops. The laptop in
question boots fine off of a Windows XP disc.  I have tried various
combinations of the following boot options: acpi=off, noapic, nomodeset, nomce,
xforcevesa, irqpoll, noirqpoll.
While booting, it gets hung up at the following line:
platform eisa.0: Probing EISA bus 0

ETA: The laptop is running Phoenix A13 Bios, the most recent version for this computer according to Dell's website

Google says it's a kernel bug.  Not aware of any resolution at this point.

Is there an SD card plugged into the laptop?  I had a netbook that wouldn't boot because of the SD media plugged in.  This happened with Ubuntu and Mint.

No SD cards, this laptop doesn't have the ports. There is no PCMCIA card installed, I even pulled the floppy drive (yes, its old). Also add "nolapic" and "acpi_osi= " to the list of unsuccessful options. I have read of people using Linux Mint on these old computers, but not having this hard of an issue.

Live CDs require a lot of memory

What are you running?

I've had a few issues with older hardware recently not being able to support the newer kernels. I wonder if you went back a few distros and tried one of them if it would work.

It has 512mb, the max it can support. There is a thread in the Linux Mint forums where a guy loaded version 7 on the same computer, I may need to go this route.

I'm gonna say lack of memory is the issue

It appears to be something with running the old hardware, Mint 13 loads without an issue

Yeah, max 512mb and a floppy drive on a laptop kinda hinted at that

Mint 13 might be a better choice anyway. It is the LTS edition so it isn't really going to hurt you.

Why are you trying to use Mint XFCE
