Running the latest Ubuntu Netbook edition from flash drive.  I noticed some weird behavior last couple of days e.g. weather applet crashing, power applet stopping, file browser (Nautilus) failing.  Today I finally saw an error on shutdown:

Could not update ICEauthority file /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server.
(/user/lib/GConf/2/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

Found some suggestions online but none of those chowns/chmods worked on gdm - error accessing file

These permissions on gdm can not be good.  Is this the real problem?  Any suggestions?

Looks like a corrupted disk. Need to fsck the drive.

Thanks...I'm a Linux novice and didn't know such a thing existed...I'll look it up.
