I'd like to learn how to pick locks. Nothing malicious, I just think it's pretty cool and could come in handy now and again.
Can anyone recommend a good lock picking set that is good value for the money?
On a side note, I was wanting to get some para-chord, wheres the best place to get that?

I fiddle around with a Southord MPXS-14 set of picks.  But truthfully could probably get away with a smaller set for what I do with them.

There are many resources you can buy from.  Of course you need to know what you are going to learn on - and buy a set consistent with that type.

Make sure you are aware of local laws on the possession of lock picking tools.

So does it work pretty well?

It depends on your skill level and the quality of the lock.  For a beginner if you are trying to pick a desk lock you will most likely be able to unlock the lock.

As well as I'm capable of anyways.  They are made real well.
I have a practice lock cylinder that I swap pins in and practice picking.  Some set ups are easy to pick, some aren't.  I try to single pin pick instead of raking.

I use these, they work great.

NEVER use a masterlock for anything important

I get an occasional chance to pick a lock at my job. I used to just pry and twist locks.
A locksmith showed me a few tricks.
I started with a small, cheap padlock for practice.
It takes a fine touch on the tension bar and pins.
I can pick a BEST brand tumbler about half the time.
A YALE or other home type tumbler, I can access as fast as if I have a key.

Any file cabinet or desk is not secure with me around... (Mainly becuase most can be opened without a key anyhow)

Youtube is your lock picking friend.

Southord is the standard entry level pick set. You don't need 800 different picks. You'll probably only use 3 or 4.

or make your own from cheap  hacksaw blades and a bench grinder.
