PHOENIX - Taser International is advising police agencies across the nation not to shoot its stun guns at a suspect's chest.

The Arizona-based company says such action poses a risk — albeit extremely low — of an "adverse cardiac event."

The advisory was issued in an Oct. 12 training bulletin. It marks the first time that Taser has suggested there is any risk of a cardiac arrest related to the use of its 50,000-volt stun guns, The Arizona Republic reported.

Taser officials said Tuesday the bulletin does not state that Tasers can cause cardiac arrest. They said the advisory means only that law-enforcement agencies can avoid controversy if their officers aim at areas other than the chest.

Critics called it a stunning reversal for the company.

Police have to take the ride in order to carry one.

Not true. Unless by department policy. Mine did not have such a policy. The two times I used mine it worked beautifully!

I should have clarified, in certain departments in Alabama anyway.

Realistically though, what is the % of people that have a cardiac event after being hit with the taser?

It would seem to be negligible enough to warrant keeping the devices.

In my city only tactical officers carry tazers. It is pretty good system. The tactical officers are well trained in their use and there are never those messy media problems. In the suburbs they hand out tazers to all the cops and their are constant accusations of abuse.

Aren't these those things that reduce risk of injury or death to both the officer and suspect as opposed to other means of controlling and detaining?

I suggest police go back to clubbing people with metal batons. If they are going to get yelled at, might as well use something that causes injury for real.

Well, if your department tells you you can't carry them, you'd be stupid to keep it with you on duty.

I wonder how that number compares to shootings by police that result in death.
