Hi Ladies- I am sick of reading the fitness forum and hearing all these men dropping pounds by simply not drinking soda or whatever.

I worked as a fitness trainer for 5 yrs and I have been a gym rat forever so I know all the do's and don'ts.

I just want to know what has worked for you ladies to lose weight. I am 5ft 136lbs and I have been struggling for a long time now to lose 10-15lbs. I have lost about 2-4lbs already.

I do 50 mins of cardio 3-4 times a week at the gym, sometimes I do weights. I used to be big into lifting but am just focusing on cardio now to lose weight. I count calories and try to keep my intake around 1200 or less.

It's frustrating cause I have only lost a couple of lbs in the last 2-3 months! I also quit drinking beer back in Oct and I know that has helped. I may have only one or two beers on the weekend now and not even every weekend. That's huge for me I love my beer but have grown sick of the boozing.

Anyway, just looking for advice and ideas. What has worked for you?

Well, I'm currently doing the Atkins diet, I've lost 20 pounds since early October.

With all that working out, I would suspect that just by cutting way back on carbs (white bread, pasta, sweets, etc) you can lose some serious weight.

How much do you want to lose?

I would die on Atkins. I didn't eat meat or dairy for two years about 9 yrs ago. I am a huge carb fanatic BUT I eat balanced meals I don't go crazy on the carbs. When I do eat carbs I go for wheat bread and all that.

I just want to lose 10-15lbs and I am sure it will slowly start to come off, as it already is, with all this running and watching my calories, no beer, etc. I guess I am being impatient.

Agreed.  How's your water intake?  I would suggest keeping a journal of everything (literally everything) you eat.  If you're exercising that much, and eating 1200 calories a day, there's no reason you shouldn't be losing weight.

I've read that just cutting out the cream in your coffee you can lose 10 pounds a year.

I drink water ALL day and ALL night. Another thing I stopped drinking was Iced Tea at home, that's normally what I kept on hand to drink at night but now I am only drinking water. I do have coffee in the morning, I don't know if I could go without cream in my coffee though, maybe if I slowly cut back.

One of my bad habits is cigarettes and now that I'm not boozing I am planning on TRYING to quit again. If I quit smokes coffee will be gone too.

I keep a spreadsheet of all my calories. Weekends are hard. But Yea I SHOULD be losing, and have only seen a couple pound difference so far in about 3 months. I haven't been as strict for the whole 3 months, just about the last month has been very serious so I guess I need to just keep up the good work and in the next few weeks I plan to see some more results.

coffee is my problem. I get teased that I should just have it on an IV drip all day. Sigh.

Nikki,

try switching up your cardio, if you already don't.  If you've been doing elyptical, try treadmill, or vice versa. or an aerobic class once a week.  My trainer told me that the body adjusts to your routine, so the same workout might not work as well after a while.

just a thought.

Thanks Daisy. I do mix my cardio up all the time, every day every week I do it differently. Though I have been running mostly now but I know that is killing the calories!  I also do Yoga at home anywhere from 2-5 times a week. Which I love.

I think I just really don't have that much to lose and my body is really hanging onto the weight for whatever reason.

Well, then stop looking at the scale.  Don't play the numbers game.  I hate scales, only use them about once every 2 weeks.  It's depressing, and misleading.

One thing that helped me loose weight was I got a personal trainer for 12 sessions. The trainer had me do different things each session and my body really loved it. I would have to say that the one thing that my trainer had me do that really worked was boxing. Not the actual hitting each other boxing, but kinda like Tae-bo. It worked great! And good luck to you.

I would love a trainer, but they are horrendously expensive at Gold's... at least as my wallet goes.

OK, I'm one of those guys that's losing a lot every week - up until a couple weeks ago.

Anyway,I was reading someplace that it helps to accelerate weight loss if you do aerobics every other day and resistance exercise (weights) on the days inbetween.  Sort of goes with changing the routine on a daily basis.

Apparently something in the body gets triggered by doing a mix like that - so, exercise 6 days a week and rest on the 7th with one day aerobic, the next weights, etc...

I lost 5 lbs in the last 2 wks by cutting down on carbs (pasta) and eating more protein (chicken, fish). Our bodies tend to store carbs and don't burn them as efficiently as protein.

My suggestion is Crossfit.  They have a webpage crossfit.com and I get my daily exercises from a friends page.  There's a link on the webpage to show you how to do the exercises if you aren't sure what they are.  Its' really important that you stick with it though.  Its not always easy but it has helped me burn thru some serious calories.  I've dropped about 10 pounds in 3-4 months.  I also try to eat right (which isn't always easy; also known as the milkshake and fries lunch).  Just my .02 cents.

Only thing that works for me is watching portion sizes and getting off my lazy ass. I work out in the gym at work (12:30 AM and it's all mine!) and do some yoga at home a few times a week to stay limber. I also inherited my Dad's great metabolism so as long as I'm moving, I'm good.

I lost 94 pounds. I can tell you how I did it if you really want to know. Not easy but I lost the first 50 in the 3 month period and the rest over the rest of the year I dropped it all.

Wow!
You being a female...you've lost a whole person!
You must've really worked hard to do that!
I'm right behind you at 88 pounds now lost.
I'm doing a modified Southbeach (need more carbs/protein for swimming) diet now and I lap-swim 1.25 miles every other day.

Proud of you...I know from personal experience how difficult it is to lose weight.

Get your  thyroid checked. While it won't cause you to be obese as a lot of people claim, it can make you old on to 10 or 15 lbs. I lost about 20 lbs after my thyroid evened out, but some of that was water I was retaining in my feet.

I've lost 4 pounds in 36 hours...stomach flu.

Reminds me of that commercial, where the cartoon lady is trying to loose weight. Hubby quits drinking pop and looses weight, lady drinks water and looses her boobs!

Hubby & I started working out on the treadmill & elipitcal each morning at home. So far haven't lost any weight  But feel in better shape. Now just have to start on the diet side.  Hard to do with holidays and good food all around!

Already did, no thyroid problems here.

Having a partner in crime helps. Someone to work out with and get encouragement from. You can pay a trainer - or you can enlist a friend and study exercise techniques and healthier diets together, without forking out the cash to a trainer.

I was a fitness trainer for 5 yrs, I definitely don't want to or need to hire a trainer. I have been going to the gym with 2 girls from work. We have been on a roll going 4 times a week and it's been really good.

As I said in my OP, I was a trainer before, I eat healthy and balanced meals and I am exercising almost 7 days a week in some form or another.

Sometimes it seems people don't read the OP before replying (not directed at you XCR) But I just simply want to know what has worked for some of you woman to get that lil bit of weight off that just won't let go.

I'm curious how you did it. I don't need to lose nearly that much weight so I'm not sure if what you did would help me but I'm still curious.

No that comment was NOT directed towards you at all, I just had to say it becauase a few responses were questions about stuff I had already mentioned like my eating habits, or advice on getting a trainer when I already am one LOL. I guess I could still get a trainer but to me that would be a waste of money when more then likely I have more info then they do

I appreciate all the reads and responses regardless though, not trying to come off bitchy here LOL. I am just frustrated that's all. But I've been having a great week so far and plan to see more pounds disappear!

slimquick may help you. I know it sounds a little bogus - like most hocus-pocus weight loss drinks do... But I drink it and it seems to help me drop weight a little faster. It's supposed to specifically help women lose weight easier.

Yea I've questioned trying something like that. I see a lot of commercials for things like that for woman. It's like our bodies just want to hold on to any extra weight for child bearing or something LOL. It's ridiculous.

But I really don't like to take stuff like that so I don't know. I guess it may be something I might have to try if I don't start seeing more serious results in the next few weeks. Although I have to be extra patient through the holidays ya know, the holidays are tough!

I'm 5'2" and 135, I was up to 150 once because I was working an ordinary job and eating a big unnecessary lunch. Now I'm on the yoga or step (yeah, 80's step.. you want to see some sweat...) during lunch program while I'm in college and have the time. Back at work, I'll probably go to the skipping dinner routine. I'm a 2 eats-a-day person who must have breakfast.

What DOESN'T work for me is trying to eat more and less at each.. I never get hungry that way (which is the point, I think) but I am eating all the time.. even if it's granola bars and fruit paste.

I went on birth control and lost 4 lbs and gained a cup size.. I could recommend that.

I've been doing a low carb/carb cycling routine like hubby since August. It really works, even without exercise. A ketogenic diet combined with weight lifting is even more amazing...burns cals and fat like crazy. I've been very happy with the results.

I've been an exercise nut all of my life.  My job keeps me very active [I run 6 miles daily for my work] but this past year manage to put on some extra weight.  I never get too worried about a few extra pounds in the winter months [I typically gain 5-6 pounds extra each winter] but this time it didn't come off during the summer months [thank you Middle age ]  I joined a gym last month and I work out 4-5 times a week.  On my visits to the gym 2-3 times weekly I'm pretty dedicated and work my hinney off, the other times I make it in [I'm pretty busy] eh I work out and get sweaty but nothing to write home about.  The weights dropping off.  I think the plus side is that I never do the same two exercises twice.  I'm always keeping my body guessing [I'm still running daily in work mind you].  Anyway, not sure if that would work for you but you might give it a try.
PS I'm like Daisy, I don't eat bad carbs.  I went on the Atkin's diet in 84 and have been on since.  I do have a few bad carbs now and then but basically no white breads, stratchy foods or fruits tons of vegies and meat.

Yea I was huge, 230 at the time. I did a liquid diet for about 3 weeks then ate small all protein mushy type of food (egg salad, light white fish) and that was it really with some v8 type of drinks or protein smoothies to get in more protein since I would get in at least 96 grams of protein and stay under 30 grams of carbs and  A LOT of water. Just stuck to 3 oz of meat at a time with small portion of veggies after that. Didn't eat bread, pasta or rice the whole time honestly. Now I eat anything I want in small portions and have not put on more than 5 pounds here and there but I also work out every day but Sunday.

I hate cardio, can't pay me to do it, lost all the weight just using weights and machines.
