Imagine, if you will, a fantastic near future in which the United States is facing an unmitigated economic implosion. Not just a mere market crash, or a stint of high unemployment, but a full spectrum collapse driven by unsustainable debt spending and hyperinflationary printing. The American people witness multiple credit downgrades of U.S. Treasury mechanisms, the dollar loses its reserve status, devaluation of the currency runs rampant, and the prices of commodities and imported goods immediately skyrocket.
In the background of this disaster, a group of financial elite with dreams of a new centralized economic and political system use the chaos to encourage a removal of long held civil liberties; displacing Constitutional protections they deem “outdated” and no longer “practical” in the midst of our modern day troubles. This group then institutes draconian policies through the executive orders of a puppet president, including indefinite detention, assassination, and even martial law against citizens. "The Swedes", hmm what could that be a euphamism for?
There is certainly a bit of naivete in there as well. I'm guessing the author doesn't have a whole lot of experience with truely authroitarian societies. The reason you see technologies like those used is because there is at least some respect for intate rights in our society. In the type of world he is suggesting those technologies would merely be at best an intial "path of least resistance" tool, that if failed would be backed by more heavy handed measures. In a truly authoritarian, repressive society without any respect for liberty putting ear plugs in to counter the sound cannon wouldnt work because even if the sound cannon was rendered ineffective they would simply shut of the cameras and start beating/shooting people. |

Its a good topic. There are things that would help....
Everyone should be familiar with pen and paper encryption. Even with computers, if you layer a couple methods, if your messages are short enough, and if the plain text under the encryption is padded or obscured to limit frequency analysis... and keys are changed frequently enough, you can communicate without big brother knowing what you're saying.
