Did Harry shoot the last cop target intentionally?  I always thought he did it to send a message to the the rookies that he was on to them.  My Dad thinks it was an accident, but still meant as foreshadowing for the rest of the film.

Accident...
2/18/2017 11:20:24 PM EDT
[#2]
Intentional. he wanted a chance to try david soul's colt, to see if the round matched a round from a homicide. so he threw the last round shooting the python too, so he could go back and recover it.

OBVIOUS and 100% intentional... part of the film, I thought that was painfully obvious to everyone?
2/18/2017 11:22:23 PM EDT
[#4]
He could have just asked to shoot the python after a victory.
2/18/2017 11:22:53 PM EDT
[#5]
On purpose.  Let the other guy win, then uses his loss to shoot the other guys gun.  Goes back later and pulls the slug for ballistics.

Smart, like tractor.

Sorry, I didn't mean the very last shot with the rookie's Python, I meant the shot with his .44 that lost the match for him.

Two bad guys come out then after they're smoked a cop comes out from the same exact place?  Yeah, intentional.

he threw the match, intentionally, to put them at ease and take a turn with the python. at least that's my interpretation... the guy was feeling pretty good about himself, he's not going to suspect harry's motive in trying the python..

Agreed, but I remembered him giving a slight pause before he shot the cop target, making it obviously intentional.  This is the first time I've watched it in many years.

Yes on purpose.

Subconsciously intentional, Harry was still working over in his head about the case he was on. His subconscious automatically fired on the cop target due to his suspicions that the bad guys "could" be cops.
After the match was done, he figured out the way to get the slug from the Python.

THIS

[#22]
The aircraft carrier scene was filmed at Point Molate in Richmond. That is the Richmond- San Rafael bridge in the background. You can see the City in some shots to the South.

And Harry shot the "good guy" on purpose. Plus he also got a chance to shoot Officer Davis's Python into a target to extract a fired slug from later.

Agreed.  Winning or losing would not have mattered.

I think he just plain screwed up on that last no-shoot target.

We tried to find the quarry pond from the final scene when I lived out there.  I can't remember if it was filled in, fenced off or if we just didn't have as much info as is available now.

Intentional.

Harry blows the match, Rookie wins, then gets Harry whom he respects and admires trying out his piece.

Harry's having an off day. Too bad, so sad. Hot shot Rookie is big man with his friends.

"I seem to have lost one there".

"You get used to it".

Doesn't suspect a thing.

Wrong; Harry had to demonstrate that he was fallible in order to throw the last shot with Sweet's gun so that he could retrieve the bullet later.

Had he performed perfectly, it might have raised suspicion when he threw that last shot.

it also made the bad guys overconfident.

The quarry is a strip mall now. I had a friend take a picture of me standing on the trellis before they tore it down.

She couldn't figure out my fascination with that trellis in Larkspur.

Yeah, I always understood the part about getting the slug from Davis' .357 for evidence/proof, I've just had a little back and forth about Harry actually losing the match.  America-first made a good justification for that.  Davis even seemed a little suspicious when Harry hands his gun back to him.

Davis was the first cop at the Guzman shooting scene. Also where Harry's friend McCoy was assassinated.

Yep, Frank and Harry talk about it in the first part of the competition scene.  By then Harry pretty much knows it's the rookies.

It may have been a ruse to try Hutch's revolver, but I think he was pretty sure on his hunch at that point, and was illustrating that he would do it, if it came down to that. The look on the face of Holbrook's character kind of confirmed IMO.

Holy crap, fucking read and comprehend the OP.   We aren't talking about the shot he obviously threw with Davis' Python, we're talking about the "good guy" target he shot with his M29.

The miss with Hutch's revolver was most definitely intentional to get the slug later, I think that's a given here.

OP's question was about him hitting the cop/good guy target.
