And now NATO ground forces will roll into Eastern Ukraine on the basis of suppressing a rogue separatist element which just shot down a passenger plane...

My money is on trigger-happy Russian separatists who thought it was a Ukrainian AN26 or similar.

What sort of air defense systems does Ukraine maintain? I would assume they and the Russians would have the technical capability to shoot down a high altitude aircraft. Buk is good to 65k feet Looks like (Wikipedia) they operate the SA-10 / S-300 as well, up to 90k ft / 30km |

Buk missile launcher was spotted by Journalists in rebel controlled territory earlier today:
"Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday. The Buk missile system can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet)." ETA: Snizhne is due east of Donetsk, the plane crashed due east of Donetsk. |

If Russia fucked up and shot it down there may end up being a lot of pissed off Chinese. They may not care what the west has to say but I'm sure they were planning on the Chinese looking the other way so this could have consequences for Russia in its little affair with Ukraine. Yup. That too. Europe was in a "we don't really give a shit" mode before this. Will this change? Will Russia care what NATO countries say? I think they already factored that into their thinking to some degree but they probably were not counting on a fuck up like this. Russians may look like they don't care about their international image but in reality, they probably do. It will depend on how many people from China and Europe were on the plane. This will increase world attention on Russias BS in the area. |

According to FlightAware it was level at 33,000 feet. Other than a jet, what ground-based asset could shoot it down that would be in that area? We will have to wait and see if DSP detected the SAM launch as it did in October 2001 when Siberia Airlines flight 1812 was shot down over the Black Sea by the Ukranians.

Flighttracker shows the flight terminating in NW Ukraine, south of Belarus.
Do the russians have their missiles forward deployed in Belarus or in separatist controlled Ukraine? That missile system is not something you just loan out to the rebels. |

I read on separatists' news feed that TWO planes fell simultaneously. One of them was a Ukrainian military AN-26. The second one was the Malaysian passenger plane. So, it seem that they fired several rockets at the military plane and shot it down. But one of the rockets hit a passenger jet which was flying nearby. Fucking idiots had killed 300 innocent people. Sad...
