Hows it work? ---------------------------------------------- 'A group of researchers in the US have unveiled an LED which emits more light energy than it consumes in electrical energy. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) unveiled the LED, which has a conventional efficiency of greater than 200 per cent. This means that unlike traditional halogen lamps and newer LEDs, instead of producing heat this LED will instead cool its surroundings. Lead researcher, Parthiban Santhanam of MIT, said: "The most counterintuitive aspect of this result is that we don’t typically think of light as being a form of heat. Usually we ignore the entropy and think of light as work.”' |

I’m calling BS on this one…
If someone told me that they had proof that bigfoot was flying around in an alien spaceship then I would be more likely to believe them than I am to believe this. That’s because both bigfoot and flying saucers might be real without violating some pretty basic rules of physics. Now, I’ll admit I’m no physicist or quantum mechanic, I don’t even have a quark wrench. So maybe there is some bizarre loophole in the rules of physics that would allow something like this... but I seriously doubt it. So, if someone can explain how this might work I’ll be glad to listen, but it had better be a really good explanation. |

how the hell is that possible? every time you convert energy from one for to another there is a loss. how hell are they producing a GAIN? Basically this diode converts thermal energy to light energy with an electric trigger. the law of conservation of energy is still in effect |

A little less dumbed down. Just as much WTF. http://phys.org/news/2012-03-efficiency.html |

More light than energy? Connect it to a solar panel, aim the light at the panel, and then generate unlimited energy. This reminds me of an XKCD comic:

Sounds like a great alternative for tvs and projectors if they can pump enough energy into them. Perfect for hydroponics for many plants. I'd just love to have the option. Computer monitors? Beats the hell out of the suntan I used to get in the 90s from playing Dune and deus ex on the ole radiation king.

Law of conservation of energy.....energy can neither be created nor destroyed. I'm no Einstein, but I know physics and chemistry. This goes against everything I learned in school. So I'm tagging this. Not impossible. I would like to hear the science behind it. |
