Alright, just read that in the 80's early 90's 11D was dragon gunner.

IIRC, the 11D was discontinued by the army a while ago.

I thought 11X was a designation for "some type of infantry to be determined at a later date"?

When I signed up I was 11X, but at the end of basic/AIT, lo and behold I was an 11B.

Never heard of 11D, but I'm sure I haven't seen it all.

This would have been during Vietnam, does that change anything?

11X isn't an MOS, it's just an undeclared infantryman when he enlists.  From 11X, and before you graduate OSUT, you will be an 11B or 11C.

There are no 11Ms anymore.

Now I found this

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Armor Center trained MOS 11D, armored reconnaissance specialists, the forerunner of the 19D cavalry scout.

Well aware, just putting it out.  Hencse the "still figuring it out" aka undecided.

Found this from a good source...

Among recommendations submitted by the Tank Forces Management Group, twenty-eight concerned personnel actions. One of the most important was the establishment of a separate armor management field. Some of the broad military occupational specialties such as 11D, Armor Reconnaissance Specialist, and 11E, Armor Crewman, will be broken down into more descriptive categories and assigned new numbers in the 19-series. For example, 11E will be split into five new MOS's-19G Armor Reconnaissance Vehicle Crewman; 19H, Armor Reconnaissance Vehicle Driver; 19E M48-M60A1/A3 Armor Crewman, 19F Tank Driver, 19J M60A2 Armor Crewman; and MOS 11D will be converted

11B= Infantry
11X= You just enlisted as infantry, dont have an Identifier within the branch, and your going to let the Army pick for you. IE, you enlist in the Army as Infantry, havent been to basic, your an 11X, then you got to OSUT at Benning, they decide if your going to be an 11B, 11C, during your basic and AIT.
11D= OLD Branch and branch Identifier for Cavalry Scouts. Scouts were reorganized Armor Branch sometime in the late 60s I think, and thus became 19Ds.

HTH

Shit sarge, I was a Dragon gunner in 1990.  Either my mind is going, or I swear my MOS was never listed as 11D.

For some strange reason, I remember having an extra identifier in my alphabet soup.

Ain't sayin you're wrong (you're probably right), but

ETA:  OKAY, so it takes me awhile to type this shit up!!!!  (Answer is already posted)

No problem, just took me awhile to shift through the BS before I could find an answer.
