Carefully review the listings on ebay. You can get a good deal. Just check dates.

Here is a suggestion, I would shop your local super market for canned and shelf-stable food. If you think about it, MRE retort pouches are like canned food without the can. You can buy what you want to eat, and a heck of lot cheaper. Many times MREs contain food that you don't like so you have to either dump it or trade it away, but remember you paid for it already. You even save yourself more money by waiting until they go on sale.

To boot, the canned food is also vermin-proof, vermin can easily gnaw(ie mice, rats etc) through the aluminized-plastic of MREs.

The military uses MREs because it saves them trouble, hand a person a pouch and it is a complete meal, with "everything from soup to nuts,"  AND it can be air dropped(wow, isn't that wonderful?)

GD has been a bit to serious tonight. OP: just buy a full case of MRE's menu itme no. 4: the cheese and veggie omelet, by far the tastiest of them all

Beans and Franks and Beef Patty were usually good. Ham slice is nasty.

Never had the first 2 but I liked the ham... trade for an extra flat bread and some Jalapy cheese... Good eatin.

Most of the stuff I can remember was Nasty Chili Mac, Salsbury steak, Chicken alfredo, Chicken and Rice and the Ham... I'd choose the ham over the rest almost any day!

$65-80 on eBay, depending on how new they are, and there's a much cheaper way to get them that requires friendship.

It would be a good idea to call and figure out what the inspection dates are before ordering those.

Better food options exist for weight-concious hikers, and for everyone else, as has been said, just go to the grocery store.

Unless you want a case just to try em. I loved the old dehydrated pork patties.

That's just plain mean. The only up side to that one is you could usually get candy in it.

I've still got a few from the late '80s kickin' around!  I'm sure they're "kinda" fresh....

For the bang for the buck, MREs aren't too bad.

I'd rather have the other choices out there. Not that MREs are awful, but there's just better tasting things out there. Plus that "bread" will stop up your intestines like a shower drain plug.

Shipping will kill most deals.  So, I suggest buying them locally on Craig's List.

But.....yes, canned goods are much more readily available and at a better price.  Just rotate your stash.

And, lately I've been seeing freezed dried food stuffs (complete entrees) at my local grocery store.  Of course they are more expensive than can goods.

I have 2 + cases around here that a buddy gave me.  He's in the Army reserves and hates the things.  But I did buy one case off of e-bay last year for around $85.00 shipped.

MRE Depot... I do not know how they are these days but I have used them in the past and they had pretty good deals.

ETA: Also take a look through the EE and survival forums here at arfcom.

That's what I was going to suggest. I've bought MRE's from them in the past with no problems.

MRE's aren't the cheapest food, or the best for all purposes, but they are nice and convenient when camping, etc. I especially like that they have the heater in the bag and all you need to add is a little water.
