What's the difference between a buffer in an m4 and a semi auto ar carbine?

There are different weight buffers, but until someone smarter than me comes along, I'm going to say no difference at all.

The length of the buffer is based on the length of the stock, and the length of the barrel.

Also, I've noticed that shorter M4 (11.5 and 10.3) in conjuction with the use of a suppressor and in FA, may need a heavier buffer to avoid bolt bounce issues/jams
