My daughter is about ready to complete her first year at college. So far the grades are good and she is taking school serious. She is asking for a new computer, a MacBook pro.  These things are not cheap. Is there any place to get a better price or does Apple keep the price fixed on these things?

They have .gov discounts but that's about it. I think you save $100.

Worth every penny, they have a pretty good discount for college students on mac books too, something like $200. Go into a store and ask about it.

Apple also sells factory refurbs through their website.  I bought each of my daughters refurbed Macbook Airs for Christmas and they are like new.

She will never go back to a PC. I have bought 6 used macbook pros  circa 2007 off ebay, and they have lasted. I will never buy a pc again

Go with 8 GB ram and a solid state hard drive. You won't be sorry. I upgraded mine recently and it's like having a new machine.

Mine is a Late 2008 model.
