Just watched the movie Machine Gun Preacher from RedBox. It's a good movie with a lot of gunfighting and a great story line. All based on a true story. The beginning of the movie is pretty hardcore, the wife didn't like it at first because of all the drugs and violence but when he starts killing the evil African warlords, she liked it as well.

Here is the preview.

Now getting ready to watch Act of Valor.

from what I have heard, it sounds like a film where instead of "raising awareness" for an issue someone just went and put their money where their mouth is

is this about right?

The story is based on Sam Childers, a real life ex con who decides after years of fighting drugs and living a hard life to go to Africa. He ends up not just helping people but actually going after the warlords themselves. It's a true story, you can google him if you want to read more about his life.

I knew the basic story but he does actually do instead of hoping others will act, correct?

I respect that

In the movie(I don't know about IRL) he does.

Watch the movie, google his name. He has freedom fighters working with him, they go on raids into Sudan and Darfur to take out the bad guys while rescuing kids. He's been actively fighting and helping children since the mid 90's- so he's seen quite a bit and lives the life. Probably one the best movies I've seen.

The religious and un-pc content of that film caused much butthurt among Hollywood reviewers

Not surprising.  I watched this a few nights ago and the religious content seemed a little too much at first, but it was just a necessary part of the movie.  I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend watching it.

We have a guy on this website who is a preacher IRL and owns/shoots many guns, including machine guns.

Can't remember his S/N though.  Probably shouldn't post it anyway for his privacy.

Great movie, although, there has been some controversy regarding the real-life Sam Childers and his "cause" in Africa.

I wanted to give my unbiased update after watching two films last night.

Act of Valor was a steaming pile of horseshit of a movie. Machine Gun Preacher is an excellent film- one of the best I have seen in a while.

I agree, it is an excellent film. After I watched it I googled the hell out of Sam and his outfit. Seems pretty legit, and a damned worthwhile cause. During the credits the real Sam is asked about the violence he uses, and he says (paraphrased)," If somebody took your child, and I told you I could get him back, would you really care how I did it?"

It was decent.  I was anticipating it quite a bit, so of course, I was a bit let down.  Definitely worth a Netflix run.

I'm about half way through the book Another Man's War right now. It's really good. He alternates chapters between his incredibly dark past and conversion to Christianity with chapters about his work in Africa.

Of course there's religious content. The whole story is about a born-again Christian missionary.

I'm sure the controversy stems from the fact it's not the UN doing the work. He takes some pretty hard digs at the NGOs that work in the area for their inefficiency and lack of actually attempting to help the locals, and the US government for selling weapons to those who commit the atrocities, as well as throwing money at relief while not attempting to stop the problem. In fact he's convinced a friend of his was killed by the US government for attempting to out the gov for their unethical weapon sales.

- Someone needs to tell those guys that it really is okay to unfold the stocks on their AKs and actually use the sights to aim them.

I might be thinking of you, but I thought this guy was from Texas.

He had a thread a few months ago with pictures of him shooting a flame thrower.

So if that's you, then yeah, you're him.

I see him insinuating some relationship to outlaw biker gangs. What gang was he supposedly a member of?

In the movie?  No gang.  He just rode a motorcycle and wore leather.  No references to biker gangs, although I think he went into a biker bar a couple times.

I see references in interviews with him that claim membership or affiliation with 1%ers.

From his Vanity Fair interview:

Using drug money to buy his first big motorcycle, he was soon riding with the Outlaws, the Hells Angels, and the Pagans.

I am just naturally skeptical of people who make amazing claims. Not saying he didn't do this things, and good on him for turning his life around. Where do the stories for the movie come from? Are these his own interpretation of the events? Just curious, I do plan on watching the movie.

I really liked that movie. Childers was an impressive dude. Lots of people talk, very few people do, and actually make a difference.
