Watched it again last night because the wife had never seen it.
I haven't seen the other two movies in a while and I had a question... It seems like society is breaking down in the movie ("Hall of Justice" in decay, Not many police cars, talk of a fuel shortage, "danger zones" on the highway, and roving gangs of obviously gay bikers). Is it ever explained in any of the movies what caused the decay and why the second movie is so much more post apocalyptic? |

Quoted:
You married a woman that hadn't seen Mad Max? Need pics to determine level of outrage. I know it's almost unthinkable, we've been married for 7 years and I'm just now finding out that she hasn't seen most the classic 80's movies. I guess I just assumed but it turns out she wasn't allowed to watch many "adult" movies as a kid so we are going back through all my favorite classics. |

You get to rewatch your favorite movies, she gets to enjoy them for the first time, and you get to see her positive reactions as you go. |

In the first movie, which was made in the late 70's just after Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the Commonwealth had huge economic trouble thanks to the UK ending their free trade zone with them when the UK joined the EU.
Pile that on with the social chaos that was prevalent in the late 60's and early 70s and you get the setting for MM1 if things kept going to shit. MM2 was made as the Cold War was reaching maximum pucker factor and so the WWW3 theme was tacked on to the beginning letting them take MM2 to the next level of hyper violence. |

So it sounds like the events of Mad Max happened in the decline of society immediately after a war between the superpowers and the world continued to decline leading to the events of The Road Warrior. I guess I always assumed that the war happened between the first and second movie. |

Watch Road Warrior (that's the first one) and it is after the nuclear wars...doesn't say who started it...only no winners and society is split between those that live in the wasteland (the lawless) and those that are trying to rebuild.
Mad Max is the sequel..... |

No. Mad Max is the first movie and was an international hit everywhere except the USA, Mad Max 2 was called The Road Warrior in the US because hardly anyone here would want to see part 2 of a movie set they hadn't seen in the first place. Google it |

AMC movie notes if you want to learn more about the film.
My favorites: "A lot of the stunt driving in this movie was illegal and done quickly before authorities could find out." "The truck driver was paid a case of beer for his vehicle and driving." |
