Does anyone have that awesome pic showing a bunch of clips and a bunch of mags? I am trying to wean a friend off saying clip when he means mag. |
| The real issue is not what someone calls it. I get somewhat annoyed with the piddly shit nit picky attitude of some in this regard. The real issue is whether or not you understand what they mean. FWIW Remington and other large manufacturers generally refer to their " Magazines " as Clip magazines. |
Well, that's fine for you. I prefer to use the right words for things. Maybe that's because I'm in a professional, technical field where accurately conveying information matters. Or then again, maybe it's the other way around: maybe I'm a professional in a technical field because being accurate matters to me. In any event, it sounds like you don't have the pic I'm after but thanks for your input. |
I agree with you. It's all piddly shit. I know it's incorrect but I also know what is meant by it when it's said. I often have friends who say "clip" when we are shooting together. Since we usually aren't shooting with Garands, but instead AK, AR's and 10/22's, when they ask for a clip I just hand them a fresh mag and leave it at that. It always works. I feel no need to make a big deal out of it, as it really isn't all that important. |
Dude: Mello out. I'm picturing you holding a clip in one hand and a mag in the other and turning purple while yelling at your associate the difference between the two. |
That's not what's actually happening. It's someone who isn't familiar with older rifles (Garand for example) or the clips used to load AR mags. A description is insufficient. I want the pic that shows them all. Seriously, I wasn't trying to "feel the pulse" of ARFCOM in regards to how much they care when someone uses the wrong term. I don't care. I don't care if you refer to concrete as cement either. I really don't. It's a pic request, that's all. You've made your point; you don't care what people call mags. Now I just want my pic. |
Well, they're wrong. |

That's awesome, thank you Leelaw. |
I like the demo he gave. He held up a News magazine, and a paperclip. "Now you see the clip fits in the magazine." Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. |
|
Seems like the phrase: "I shot 2 clips into him.." would still be accurate... say in talking about 5.56 he would be saying that he shot the guy 20 times (2 stipper clips @ 10 rounds each) In fact, this may even be more exact that saying "I shot a mag into him" because then we'd be wondering if it were a 20, or 30 round mag right?

I have guns that use magazines, I have guns that use clips, I have rifles that use magazines, and I have rifles that use clips, same with handguns (pistols) I do not have a revolver that uses magazines or clips yet, but I am goign to get one that uses clips I also have rifles, gun, and handguns that do not use removeable magazines OR Clips |
You left the last part out... a gun feeds hot lead to hajii As an squad leader of mine once said, a clip is something that little girls put in their hair, ya fuckin' pansy! He broke me of the whole clip/magazine thing quickly. ![]() |

My m48 mauser uses clips mister clips-only-feed-m1garands. There is a difference between "clips" and magazines", particulartly when you are discussing military-style firearms. I've got plenty of stripper clips but I don't have the piece to connect the clip to the magazine. Nor can I find one locally. |
Except the M1 Garand? Doesn't the M1 have a fixed magazine that is loaded with a clip? It's just not a stripper clip. The clip itself is inserted into the magazine, en bloc, and the magazine presents the rounds to the bolt for feeding. Correct? |
Thank you. That's the actual picture I remember having seen and was thinking of. |
Do you know who he is? You do realise he invented the .44 magnum? "The result was a new small-case propellant that would deliver a consistent 2400 fps velocity with 45-grain bullets from the modified .22 WCF case, and the powder went on the market as the soon-to-be-classic Hercules "2400" (now you know; and how interesting it is that 2400 would be the powder Elmer Keith later standardized in his creation of the .44 Magnum)." He also did a great deal of development on the .357 with Doug Wesson. He invented the keith bullet, which is a semi wadcutter. He was one of the first writers ever to advocate the use of handguns for hunting big game. He was an inspector for ogden arsenal during ww2. He wrote for The Outdoorsman, The American Rifleman, Western Sportsman, Guns, and Guns and Ammo. When the Outstanding American handgunner Awards Foundation was established to recognize outstanding contributions to handgunning, it was a foregone conclusion that Elmer would be the first recipient. The original award was given to him in 1973. |
That's kind of what I thought. He doesn't have any of those AR clips and he's not really familiar with older firearms so he knows mags but not clips. He is a movie-freak (has hundreds of DVDs) and I think he has picked up terminology from hollywood. |

It doesn't really bother me that much, but I do correct them. When I do, I carefully tell them that the reason I'm correcting them is so that other gun owners don't think less of them. It's a simple way to help avoid being labeled as a moron. If you call it a clip, you may or may not catch hell for it. If you call it a magazine, no one will correct you. In the off chance someone DOES correct you for calling it a magazine instead of a clip, you've just learned a great deal about their experience and knowledge with regard to firearms. See? It's not just petty. I correct people I like, so that others won't think less of them. For gangbanger types, I prefer to let them remain ignorant. |
