Does anyone here play?
I quit several years ago, but I recently started playing online again for free at magic-league.com. I went to a modern tournament at my local cardshop last night and got 5th out of 12 playing a deck with only commons and uncommons.
Red deck wins |

I've got a couple of these cards: http://vandel.dk/magic/artifact/Black%20Lotus.jpg Are they any good? Those are good in certain decks, I'll trade you a couple mags for them. |

I was a heavy M:TG player back in the day. I still have all of my cards (boxes and boxes of them [the two foot by 3 foot ones], probably 15K+) from Beta all the way through Visions and a few newer including about half of the "Power Nine."
I have some friends who still play but, they play mostly new stuff and I don't have the time, money and inclination to re-learn the game. So they come over with their new-fangled crud and my White/Blue Flier or Red DD or Greenie Weenie decks still spank them. I miss the days of sitting in coffee shops on Decatur Ave in New Orleans and throwing cards with some of the best people in the world. Or going to tournaments and cons and getting the thrill of winning (or the nagging feeling of inadequacy from defeat) and learning the new "broken combos" like the Icy/Orb (remember THAT nasty mess?). I keep threatening to sell my cards but, there's so many memories in those cardboard boxes. |

I still have mine in a couple of boxes in the basement. I played mainly in the Revised/4th edition/ice age/alliances/homelands era. I have some cards from Legends. I think that's about as far back as I have. Haven't played in years. I need to sell them, but I never think about it. |

I always had a pretty good knack for looking at cards and figuring out how they should work together or buy me enough time to develope a solid base to work with. I have a White/Blue deck that doesn't even get started to look like anything that anyone would worry about until about the 8th round. After that, it developes so quickly it almost impossible to defend against. A lot of the card space in that deck is dedicated to buying time to the 8th or 9th pass. Oddly, I can play the deck over and over again against the same players and they can never seem to get ahead of it even though it's so god-damned slow. The only thing I ever need to fret with it are the denial/needler blue decks. But I have a side board to deal with those. ETA: You'd have to add some decimals to the right of that offer to get me in my office and shipping those cards. |

I started playing in the Beta, Unlimited, Antiquities, Legends and Arabian Nights days. Stopped after a couple of years. Wish I still had all my cards. Could probably swing a FA or two with what they were worth at the height. I don't remember anything about Beta,Unlimited etc. What 'generation' (for a lack of better term) of cards would have been say 1992-1995? |

All I know is M:TG people go gah gah over those cards. In the height of popularity, a Black Lotus in mint condition from Beta would cost ~4-500 dollars. It's an extremely broken, rare and powerful game piece. |

Quoted: I keep threatening to sell my cards but, there's so many memories in those cardboard boxes. They're not worth nearly what you might think. I looked into selling mine about six months ago, and I was looking at maybe $200 - $300 for what I easily put $2k into in high school. Even a full Tempest set had very little value. Four Cursed Scrolls or Tradewind Riders just aren't worth what they used to be. |

When I think of the time invested in that collection (not the money, mind you) I can't part with them for what I could get for them. Besides, I'm not about to sit down and catalog 15K cards so some card shop can offer me 30 percent of what they intend to sell them for. |

I quit when I realized the way to win was to spend more money than the other guy. After I dropped about $60 or $70 on decks in just a couple weeks I realized I hadn't spent that much on gaming supplies in YEARS and decided to stop before I really fell into the rabbit hole. I still have my cards and they turn up from time to time when I'm looking for something else. I should really look into selling them. Any good online price guides for older cards? I have no idea if I have anything valuable or not. |

To play standard, you have to buy an all new deck every year which means you have to buy WotC's cards which are purposefully short on supply (1 rare per booster). |

My son is into it. I really can't get into myself. I do find it very interesting, and some of the artwork is amazingly good, but I have a prblem keeping up with all the rules and stuff. Games just weren't that complicated when I was young. My son was going to a tournament thing up near Charlotte NC, but his older cousin grew out of it, and his headaches and stuff got so bad he couldn't get out anymore.
Lucky, I thought for some reason you were from NC. Let me know what your screen name on the site there is and I'll tell my son. He would probably enjoy playing it. He does the Yu Gi Yo or whatever stuff now when he feels good enough to go online. |
I never really understood the attraction, although I did see a lot of kids get carried away - almost to a level of addiction - with this as well as other fantasy games/activities. I guess I was too busy earning a living, supporting my family and shooting guns to really care too much about the fantasy world.

Maybe I'll see if I can sell some of my better cards. It would be fun to turn my "OMG SATANIC CARD GAME THAT WILL CORRUPT OUR CHILDREN" into "OMG GUNS WITH 33 ROUND MAGAZINES ASSAULT CLIPS SO YOU CAN KILL PEOPLE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE." |

I've never known anybody that goes "And I conjure up the powers of my home lands, the Zarnith Mountains, and cast Fireball at your foul zombies!" It's more along the lines of "Here's a fireball." |
| I quit playing yeas ago when an 8-year-old pulled out a Black Lotus in a game. Since I was buying my own cards and working to support my habit I couldn't keep up with the my-mommy-buys-my-stuff crowd. Also the people who played the game were pretty nerdy. I learned it from GWAR roadies so I figured it was the cooler of the nerdy games. |
| I've got a shoebox full somewhere. I think the last I bought were 7th Edition in 2002'ish. I remember the last few games I played someone had a bunch of bullshit from PlaneScape(?) I think? It just got too much to keep up with. Phase shift, tokens that make damage-proof creatures, etc. I lost interest. |

I spent money on the game but, I was never one to save up hundreds of dollars to buy singles like Moxes or Timetwister and such. Like was pointed out above, you can't beat a good player just because you have expensive cards, there's a shit-ton of skill and a bit of luck involved. Most of the people I met weren't what I would call nerdy but, my threshold for nerdy may be a bit further down the through than many other people's. |

Quoted: Quoted: I'm going to start doing online draft tournaments once I move. I figure a few bucks a month for a few hours of fun would be worth it. You can play for free on magic-league.com Yeah, I signed up and am in the draft room. One for unlimited came up but the iDraft software I have didn't have the card set. |

I played as a teenager.
Recently sold like 9 cards for about 1200$. I still have a set of the power 9 in the back of the gun safe, considering selling them to fund a .308 of some kind. If the lotus wasn't beat to crap it could fund me an M16 Quoted:

To compete in the type I tournament environment when I played (early-late 90's) you had to either have A) Really deep pockets or B) Have started in the beginning. When I got my moxes etc they were coming out of packs and being bought for 5$ a piece. I just had the foresight to stash them as soon as Revised was announced and they went out of print. I could rebuild MOST of my type 1 deck that won a few tournaments. Black/green speed creature using juzam's, hypnotic specs, elves of the deep shadow, dark ritual, the lotus, 5 moxes, demonic tutor etc. 1st turn 5/5 was not uncommon, 2nd turn was almost assured. I ran a Green/Red variant of it during the ice age block and just used tinder walls and balduvian hordes instead of dark ritual and juzams. direct damage replaced the rest. It's kind of funny how much I remember of this, considering most of it was 15-16 years ago |

You young guys playing these fantasy card games are lame. Middle-aged D&D nerds like me from the 80's rule! ![]() I'd still play D&D if I had a decent group, I just can't stand 99% of "tabletop gamers" anymore. Also why I don't get back into Magic, the "gamer nerd" stereotype is alive and well, and smells as bad as ever. I walked in to a game shop a year or so ago during friday night magic or whatever it is they do now, with the intention of checking it out. I left about 3 minutes later. Last time I played D&D was right after 3rd edition was released. |

Then again I haven't played in 16-17 years, since right around the time I discovered vagina. Might be a correlation there now that I think about it. ![]() |

It depends, the two can mix if you are a japanese fisherman being attacked by hippies. |
