...a great winter cocktail.

Ingredients:

2 oz rye whiskey
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
maraschino cherry for garnish

Preparation:

Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice cubes.
Stir well.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with the cherry.

Agreed. I prefer it on the rocks and without the cheery.

I'd alter the ingredients as follows:

Fill cocktail glass with ice

Into mixing cup with 4-5 ice cubes pour:

1-1/2 oz rye whiskey or bourbon, of preference
1-1/2 oz Noilly Prat sweet vermouth
1/4 oz Luxardo maraschino cherry liqueur
1 dash orange bitters

stir until chilled, shaking causes pieces of ice to dislodge from cubes causing dilution after pouring

dump ice from cocktail glass
strain cocktail into glass

carefully spoon cherry with a small amount of  syrup into bottom of glass to achieve redish layer at bottom for appearance

serve.

No.  Made with Rye, sweet Vermouth, and the bitter tears of New England Patriot fans.

Garnish with a cherry.

Well Cincinnatus, I just used your recipe that you posted in the OP. Exceptions are Bulleit Bourbon and Peychaud Bitters (the only bottles of Angostura were pints and I don't need that much). I have tasted a Manhattan for the first time, verdict:

Damn you guys!

I thought the martini's were awesome, this is really good!

I am in trouble.
