|
At one point, in the middle of this exhausting work, Strauss, asked if he could call them by their names to facilitate the process. The medic said he was "Chuck." Karnes said: "You can call me 'staff sergeant.' " "That's three syllables!" said Strauss, who needed every bit of energy and every second of time. "Isn't there something shorter?" Karnes replied: "You can call me 'staff sergeant.' " Oorah. [;)] |
| Very interesting story. I had never heard this before now. I think it sums up how we all felt that day and how we all wanted to help. The one thing that stood out to me was that this story points out there were lots of "former" so and so's there that day. Marine's, paramedics, etc. But I say once a marine, always a marine. Same with paramedics, fireman, cops, whatever. |

I am humbled when I think about all of the years I was fortunate enough to serve with men and women who displayed that type of devotion on a daily basis. At the time, I took it for granted. I still keep my uniforms hanging in JOB (Junk On the Bunk) order. It is comforting to know that I am not the only Staff Sergeant to do so. |
