sorry about that. did you have to pay everything even pt gear? At boot camp you get fully issued everything, after that you buy it yourself. Active Duty is given a clothing allowance, most spend it on other things but they are given it to maintain uniforms. Reservists are allowed to survey uniforms for new issue items. |

No, you don't pay for your own uniforms, unless they're dress blues. Then that's on your dime. At least it was a few years ago.
When they came out with the new digital uniforms, we lowly reservists didn't have immediate access to them. Someone higher up in their infinite wisdom decided to try to order us to pay for the new cammies, so we could all be "uniform". That went over like a turd in a punchbowl. I wore the old woodland camo for about 2 years until I was issued a set of the new-fangled digiflage crap. |

Go back and find your LES,you were given a one time sea bag allowance that is then duducted from your pay. |

Reserves get a clothing allowance for the upkeep of your uniforms. Active you can just buy more at the clothing store anytime after your initial issue (which you pay for). I spent 3 years as an I&I, Active get an allowance reserves don't other than when activated |

"Deducted from your pay" means that I had to pay for my uniforms. Yes, we also got a yearly uniform allowance which was only a fraction of actual uniform upkeep costs because of inspections, etc... |

I was recalling that we had deductions from our pay to cover the cost of our initial issue. All of it was taken out over the 3 months +/-, of bootcamp. |

It means that they are given an allowance that is taken right back, so it is transparent to them. The government gives ever new join an allowance for their entry uniform, so this method make sure it is spent on uniforms. By law the allowance has to go to them. The reason your initial pay check was so low was the old chit system, well those chits were deducted from your pay. |

Quoted: Quoted: Korea, 1985. Marines are in cammies. The guy in the ball cap is a Sailor in Navy dress blues. I know what you're thinking; Navy uniforms suck. I'm just so confused. Dress blues? Cammies? Could y'all post pics of yourselves in uniform so I can understand? For my research. PT gear especially confuses me. ![]() http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad74/outlaw6076/YechonKoreaMarch1985.jpg "Get yo hands out yo muthinfuckin Air Force gloves Devil Dawg!!!!!!!!!" |

I think I'll need to see more before I can tell who's got the better uniforms (and who wears them better).

You can't judge us by real Marine Corps standards. We were just a bunch of laid back airwingers. I mean; look at the hair on that dude! |

I joined in 97, and we were not issued Blues at PI. We got an annual clothing allowance that was a fucking joke. At some point in the last couple years Blues became an issued item during Recruit Training. The allowance was not increased to cover this expenditure however. If you did not have your blues, you were forced to go out and buy them at that point. I was on an I&I staff so that bit is a little fuzzy for me. I already had Blues and the reservists get the kid gloves treatment while in CONUS.
Now that I think about it, the annual clothing allowance is probably sufficient. There are no more JOB inspections, and the few times a year you actually have to wear a dress/service uniform is so insignificant that the paltry sum allotted will adequately cover dry cleaning expenses. But what do I know? I am just a ghey muhreen.

Army gets initial issue in Basic. You get those uniforms DXed at the end of AIT (because they are totally fucked) and after that, you buy it yourself. You get a clothing allowance, but I don't know anyone who actually spends that money on uniforms. |
