I remember watching this movie while on a pass at basic training. I am now watching it again after I decided to pick it up on DVD. It is a great flick.

Really felt authentic. And a great one for sailors who complain about current sea duty.

KNOW YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEHIND IT!!!

That just peeved me off.  They should have thrown him overboard.

The book is better. There is actually a whole series of books dealing with the voyage of the captain and

good doctor.

It is a great flick.

Interesting aside: The ship they filmed it on is in San Diego. Most of it is fiberglass. It's painted very realistically, you can't tell from a few feet away.

The books are pretty good too, there are 20 in the series and I have only read 4 of them so far.  If you do start reading them pick up "A Sea of Words" it's a glossary of terms used in the book so you can figure out what they are talking about.

+1  I thought that Marine would've gotten disciplined.

Anyone who liked the movie and O'Brian books would probably like the "Horatio Hornblower" series even more.

I thought the scene where the kid loses his arm was tough, I don't know how I would handle the situation

With a name like Horatio Hornblower, who wants to admit they are a fan?

awesome look at history. You can learn more detail the more times you watch it. And I agree, being a sailor had a much different meaning back then, with all due respect to present day sailors.

Had he shot an officer, even one of the preteen veriety, even nicked one of them, he would have been hung after a short trial.

It was a great movie, my favorite part was the battle in the begining, where the Capt saw the flashes of cannon through the fog, and the sound of the cannon shot going past, never heard that in a movie before.

Great film, I have a copy of it, thought the whole "Darwin-esque" part was kind of a wierd choice but it worked.

I thought it was awesome. Great music, great cannon fire, muzzle flashes, big puffs of smoke, etc. Its an eye opening movie.

A favorite of mine.....

That scene when he's hanging off the starboard side with the rest of the crew in the storm is SO friggin' cool!

I bought it on DVD at Walmart from the bargain bin.  Was suprised to see it there.  Didn't intend to buy it under normal circumstances, but considering the price I did.  Turned out to be one of my favorite movies.  My father (30 years retired Navy) and I fight over it who gets to keep it at home.  When I go to visit he usually asks that I bring it with me.

Wasn't the Marine doing the shooting the detachment commander, and an officer?
It's been a while since I saw it.
Wasn't it the ships doctor that he shot? Wouldn't the ships doctor be an officer?

The Doctor appeared to be a civilian friend of the captain who came along on this voyage both as a favor and to do science. He was no common Doctor.

And the Marine, I think was sargent at best.

never have been certain of the ending, the comments about the other ships captain and dr.
They turned around to go after the ship because of what exactly?

Because the other ship's captain posed at the doctor when he gave up the captain's sword.  So, when a partial crew from the English ship went to take the French ship to do whatever it was, the Frenchies had the chance to retake their ship.

OK, but onboard ship, a Marine captain who shoots a Naval officer would still be hung.
