They are powers. X to the 2nd power for instance.

Do you mean...

(-10^6)^2 * X^2

??

The "upside down v thingies" (technical term there) imply that you're raising whatever is on the left side, to whatever is on the right side. e.g. x^2 is read: "x squared" or "x to the second power"

ETA: Beat while typing.

Mericà fuck math. ..... :-/

Ti-86 could be very useful. Used ones off of amazon could be had cheap.  (Check with be instructors if its ok for them to use)

It's cool that you're helping your child with math. Numbers aren't "dum", figure it out and help them and drill that shit into them.

Being good at math at a young age could open many doors.

It did for me.

100x^14

a power to a power is multiplied.  so its like -10x^6 times -10x^6. so -10*-10*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x.  two negatives makes positive. so 100x^12.  then that times x^2, so 100x^12*x*x.  So toss two more x's in and 100x^14.

I think he'd need an '89 to do that stuff, wouldn't he?

Stay away from the calculators as much as you can. Otherwise, his next teacher might not be so generous and he'll have to learn it all over again.

the answer is 10^12*x^14  100x^14

multiplication=adding exponents

that's what I think this problem is meant to teach.

OP, this is the sort of thing that you probably once knew but have since forgotten.

(-10^6)^2 * X^2

(1*10^12)X^2  or

1e12X^2

Eta: goddamn it, rewrite the problem using * to denote multiplication instead of x.  X is a variable, it doesn't means "times" past the 4th grade.

I remember my math teachers sayyng things like, "you'll use this everyday" and sitting there thinking yeah, cause my life's suddenly gonna change and I'll be needing to solve complex math equations tommorow, that until today I had no idea existed. Maybe I would've paid more attention if they hadn't been so hell bent on blatantly lying about the applicability of the shit that they wasted my time with.

That said, I am stunned daily by people that can't quickly figure out roughly what 10, 15, 20 etc% is, or decimal equivalents of common 1/4, 8th, 10th, 16th, fractions, since that is the sort of shit you run across regularly in the real world.

I am intimidated to think someday I'll probably be needing to help kids with homework.
