Took the opportunity today to get in a little RC flying with the “old man” this morning. We both have recently gotten back into RC, and we like to fly together at a local school yard when ever we get the chance.

The weather was cool, and a bit overcast, but the wind stayed pretty calm so we had fun.

Here’s my Dad prepping his plane.

We both have identical planes. Dad has had his about a year longer than I have, so his decals no longer match after having numerous parts replaced due to “mishaps”.

Close Up: My plane.

Close Up: My Dads plane.

My DIY flight box. Holds everything I need to take to the field. Txmitter, extra batteries, DC quick charger, spare parts, extra prop and small tools.

Dad likes tinkering with his plane. Here you can see his addition of flaps to the wings. The flaps really slowed down an already stable trainer. Almost too much for my liking. Now it’s pretty easy to stall, got to be extra careful!

Dad on a fly-by.

I had to do my own photography, so I had to fly looking through the viewfinder of my camera for this shot. Here’s my plane on a fly-by.

Coming over the top! Performing an inside loop!

The flight time together is a great way for my Dad and I to share our like interests, and kind of make up for the time we lost together while I was over in Germany for 13 years. And it’s a great way to spend time with my teenage son, teaching him to fly.

Hope you enjoyed the pics.

Happy Memorial Day!

Quib

Great pics, thanks for sharing.  What kind are they and where did you get the planes?

Those hobbyzone cubs are probably the best bang for the buck for a beginners airplane...  very durable and fairly easy to fly!  If you are new to RC, you're going to crash them, but you can literally piece them and glue them back together... much better than a balsa model...

Tons of fun!

Oh yea, I’ve had to make a couple repairs to mine already. The biggest yet...... I had to epoxy the tail back on just forward of the H-stab. Basically snapped it right off.

5-min epoxy is your friend!

Don't hold me to this, but I believe the motor and speed controller in that Cub are the same ones that are in the parkzone p51 and fw190.  They are able to take lipo batteries, you just have to switch a jumper.

If the lipos will fit into the cub (might take some work), they will make that plane very spirited!!   I have a FW190 that I want to take all the stuff out and put it into a cub.  I am planning on buying all the cub airframe components (should be about $80 or so) and putting the motor/esc, and radio from the FW in it.

Those FW190s and P51 from Parkzone are garbage.. way too under powered....

I have four battery packs total so far. Two 7-cell, and two 8- cell. The 7-cell are plenty of power for this plane. Pop in the 8-cell for some speed!

With the 7-cell you need a little dive to build up air speed for a loop. With the 8-cell a loop is no sweat from straight and level flight.

This is my other Cub, FlyZone's version.

4-channel, with the addition of ailerons makes this one a blast. Barrel rolls are always fun! But this little sucker is fast! It’s small, heavy and hardly has any cord at all in the wing. She zips along pretty good! Not as docile as the HobbyZone Cub that’s for sure!

For those interested in R/C, I thought I’d post some up-dated pics of my plane.

I always liked the looks of the Army’s L-19 Bird Dog, so I decide to strip the decals off of my Cub, and paint it similar to the pic below of the L-19.

I still have the “Stars and Bars” decals to apply, to finish things off.

Me and little fastmover went RC flyin too...

3 flights a total of <2 min in the air and 2 spectacular "landings".  On the 3rd flight the duct tape repair failed at about 100ft.  It fell like a rock! We laughed for longer than it was in the air x 100.

Well.......... at least you both had fun!

Try some epoxy next time instead of tape!

About 15 years ago I decided to try R/C.  I spent 6 months building the plane,  during the first flight maybe 5 minutes the pushrod came off the elevator.  End of story and my R/C experience.
