I applied to Memphis PD a few months back, completed the testing, aced it, and was told I would be schedualed for a background check. I havent heard anything since then, every time I call I keep getting told they still havent assinged me an investigator yet, but are still considering me for the Oct acadamy. For anyone on here that works for MPD, is it normal to be cutting it this close to the acadamy? I know theres nothing on my end that should be causing a delay or would have disqualified me, I've been working in law enforcement for over 12 years. They just havent moved in my hiring process for almost 3 months. Kinda of getting a little nervous since I'm due to get out of the military in Oct and not sure what to do with the prospect of not having a job. |

What have you been doing in the Army? And while this probably falls into the category of "if you can't say anything nice", I no longer have any friends with MPD. They all left for greener pastures. For similar reasons. My buddies who are still local and county cops in the surrounding areas are adamant that they would never work at MPD. As always, YMMV. For all I know Memphis is your home of record and you have good reasons for wanting to go there. |

It is not at all unusual for them to wait until the last minute to get things done. They are probably doing the BG check now, next step would be the psych test and physical. They have been running recruits through the academy like it is a factory lately so some delay is justified. 2 weeks until the class is not unexpected. As they say, no news is good news. RictusGrin: it's not that bad; it isn't good, but not that bad here. From what I can tell we are still better off then the county guys. A year ago I wanted to turn in my badge almost every day. Since then I found a unit I like working in, and I am not having to deal with the normal call load and BS. If I could I would go work for a smaller department tomorrow, but I can't take the pay cut. |
+1, and do your homework (like you are doing here) about the agencies. Ride along with an officer until you find someone who will SHOOT STRAIGHT with you. Even in crappy departments there are those who are stuck there against their best wishes (family can't take another move, can't afford to go through another academy, whatever), but they will still shoot straight with you. DO apply to other agencies. It is not uncommon, at least around here, to complete your background investigation at the very last moment. I don't agree with it, but that's how it happens, for some reason. -josh |

I appreciate everyones response. To answer some of the questions, I've been Security Forces (police) in the AF, and was a reserve officer for about 4 years. I've applied to several police depts, including houston and Oklahoma City. I did just find out last night that Memphis has finished my background check, they just never told me. It is still fustrating since I also heard the Oct acadamy is filled up, and thats the one I was hoping to be in, but there is supposed to be a Jan acadamy. Its just nerveracking getting so close to getting out of the military and not having any answers yet. |
