When I had a handlebar mustache (back in the regiment), I did use wax.  Had to go to London to get the good stuff.

... But for a beard?  No, never used wax.

Not to kiss up, but this.  Only because mustache hairs get into things.  (Aside, the pain from flossing your mustache between your teeth, isn't great.)

Wax keeps it where it should, and out of my coffee.  The beard is fine on its own.

Yeah.
I’ve had a beard since 1993, almost thirty years.
It wasn’t until the last five? years I started seeing this stuff.

Somehow my beard survived…

Unfortunately, now all I get for Fathers Day and birthdays is beard care shit. OMG I have a shit Tonne, and most of its useless.

Fucking hipsters…

@MedmanKS

How long is your beard?

That is an open question. I have a feeling most guys posting in here keep very short beards.

No shit.  Mine isn't very long but it's a combo of straight and curly.  If I don't use a little something in it, I get wild hairs sticking out all over and it looks unruly.

Fair question.

It’s varied. I’ve had it short, have it shorter now.
Though, just before and during the shutdown it got to not quite ZZTop length. Could grab a full fist worth plus. Not braiding long, but a “real” beard.

Had it that long in AK too when I was younger. But that was beards weren’t a thing. Except in AK…

In AK i had no beard care products. I admit I used some in the lockdown period. But honestly I think most are marketing.

Gotta put some essential oil on it (e.g., Argan). Don’t use regular soap or shampoo on it - dries your skin and hair out. Had a beard for more than a decade. #facts

I believe in taking care of myself, in a balanced diet, in a rigorous exercise routine.  In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an icepack while doing my stomach crunches.  I can do a thousand now.
After I remove the icepack, I use a deep-pore cleanser lotion.  In the shower, I use a water-activated gel cleanser.
Then a honey-almond bodyscrub.
And on the face, an exfoliating gel-scrub.
Then I apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for ten minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine.
I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older.
Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm, followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

never used honest amish.

when I was using balms, it was the stuff from Can You Handlebar.

Oil is rarely employed now, but when I do it is for special occasion dinners, etc.

I don’t really use a wax unless I’m dressing up and need the holding power. Even then I mostly use something like Beard Brand Utility Balm. Smells great and has pretty good hold.

I do use oil most days to help tame the damn thing. My beard is pretty long though.

I use some Honest Amish and some of the Beard Guys oils and balms

My beard has a ton of gray,  I need products to soften those grays so my beard does not look so ratty

I also like the scents of some  the beard oils.

You should have kept it long! Long beards are cool.

Of course there is marketing involved, but the right kind of oils/conditioners make a huge difference compared to dry

This is the Amazon description of what I use. No wax, but it did allow me to 'train' the beard, and it keeps the whiskers soft. IME, this description is true.

We use only the finest organic/natural oils and butters blended to perfection to create this magnificent beard control and conditioning balm. Similar to our other beard balm, but this one gives slightly more control and softening. Tested and approved by beard teams and beard aficionados around the world! The scent is a blend of all natural essential oils and smells like an old fashioned, pure, light, and crisp. If you like our other products, you're going to love this and if you've ever dealt with us before you know that we stand behind our products - Satisfaction guaranteed! One 2 ounce tin of heavy duty beard balm, this will last over a month for most beards. This is a leave in conditioner, not a wax, it will provide extra control over our regular beard balm. "If you re not 100% satisfied with your purchase, please return it for a full refund."

I have a short goatee. We cannot have anything longer than 1/2 inch at work, and I can't grow a full beard, for some reason, comes in patchy along the jawline.
I have never used anything but regular shampoo on the thing. I cannot imagine doing half of the thing mentioned in here. I do use Jeremy's Razors now, if that helps.
When I retire I'd like a Van Dyke, but that is years away.

Just use wax on my handlebar mustache. Other than that, soap when I'm in the shower. Don't see a reason to use fancy beard balms.Attachment Attached File

I use oil. Never used wax.

Mine has varied from around 3mm to about 8 inches, I'm in the process of growing it long again right now.

When I was first growing a beard about 5 years ago, the itching was unbearable.  I remember wanting to claw my face off.  I got some Honest Amish beard oil and beard balm, and used those maybe 1-2x, and never had any issues with itchiness after that.
