How do you guys get over mental blocks when it comes to lifting. I.E., I am stuck at 385 on squats. I just can't seem to reach that 400 lbs mark. I know it is a mental block that is keeping from achieving it. 385 seems easy for me, but the minute I put 15 more pounds on the bar, I can't seem to keep the proper form when I start squatting. I wish I had someone to work out with but the only option that I have right now is Gold's Gym and I am the ONLY person that does squats and there are very few people in the free weight area. Everyone else is on machines.

What about squatting 390? I know it sounds like a smart ass response but it really isn't.

Not smartass at all. I honestly haven't tried adding 5 lbs because the gym doesn't have 2.5lb weights. It is 5, 10, 25 etc. I did try 395 by adding 2 5lb weights but it was kind of the same deal. Do you think it would hurt to put a 5lb weight on one side? Would it upset the balance?

Buy your own 2.5lb Olympic plates and repaint them in some hideous color so it's obvious to everyone that they don't belong to the gym. Just toss them in your bag when you're done with them. You should be able to pick up a used pair from Play It Again Sports for less than $3.

Yup, they generally sell used weights at 50 cents a pound and new at $1 a pound. With high 300s on the bar you probably wouln't notice 5 extra pounds on one side, however I wouldn't reccommend it.

I also have bought several baseball bat weights.  They come in one pound incriments so you can go up 2 pounds at a time. That is how I get over little humps.  2 pounds at a time your body will never notice.

Also have a day where you get extra rest and try your max squat on that day.

Actually they come in 4 oz increments all the way up to at least 28 oz. I have a couple of the 16 oz weights, but I've been keeping an eye out for a couple used 20 oz weights.

I will have to look some more.  The smallest I found when looking was the 16 oz.  My wife uses them for overhead press because a 5 pound jump is too much for her.

Nice job.....if you had trouble getting from 385 to 400 isn't 440 a large jump.

Yeah, you should probably never plan to hit 440.

Derp.

A goal is a goal- it's not the next step or what you do tomorrow. It may take a year, but it is the goal.

Good work, OP.

That did kind of sound stupid the way i wrote it. What i meant was maybe set a smaller short term goal to prevent the mental block. Say add15 pound in the next 6 weeks.
