I've been getting this message when I navigate through websites. Just started a week or so ago. I've run AV, MalwareBytes, etc. Any ideas? Sometimes it will display a "?" mark instead of the "/" mark.

can you post what the top photo says i can't read it.
what i've read is you are possibly infected with a rootkit
or it could be an issue because of the chrome browser as well...

"An application is trying to access a protected item"
I've tried a rootkit 'eliminator' (?) but it turned up no results. I'll try to get a better screen shot in a minute

I've only seen it with Chrome running. Nothing while I just use the PC off-line. I don't use Opera, FF, or IE anymore.

I've never seen any error like that before, not with windows 98, nt4, nt5, vista, 7, etc.
It could be related to Windows' ProtectedStorage service.

Chrome is gone and so is the error. Will run IE for a bit to see if anything turns up. Man, IE seems slow.

Try FF. I agree about the slowness of IE, especially IE 9.
