I am considering getting into metal detecting and I am wondering what things I might find. Please post pictures of anything interesting you have found with your detector.
Thanks

And occasionally I find one of these:

I guess I'm just not very good with a metal detector.

The list of things you might find is virtually endless and includes everything falling under the category of "stuff made of metal".

i've been kicking around the idea of getting my father a detector. as a kid, i remember it was always older guys combing the beaches for stuff and they seemed to really enjoy it.

whats involved with being successful at it? and do people tend to keep it as a long term interest or more as a passing fad?

You can find ALL kinds of cool things with a metal detector.

I say GO for it.

I bought one once upon a time when I lived in Florida.  A Spanish gold ship had ended up washed ashore nearby way back when.  In the 1960s, the site had been claimed and most to all of the treasure was recovered by professionals.  I decided I would find all that they missed.

Over the course of ~2 years, my grand total was $0.87.  Most of that I found in the parking lots and in shady areas folks had used a lot to rest/lay out in.

It was fun though.

We actually rent metal detectors here where I work.

They are usually rented for one of two reasons:

A) Looking for a thrown/discarded wedding ring due to domestic dispute.

B) Looking for property pins due to boundary dispute.

9 out of 10 times, they return pissed off because they didn't find anything... except for the garbage I pictured in my previous post.

I used to work with a guy when I was stationed down in Corpus Christi, TX.

He had a water proof metal detector, and would spend a lot of his time in the shallow water (knee-waist deep) which is the same place people tend to swim.

He was always finding gold necklaces, rings, ear rings, keys, etc.

He would also go to the park and look around by the play ground where he would find coins of all sorts (gold & silver). it was believed that kids would take them from their parents and bring them to the park to show their friendss, and then forget them there or they would fall out of the pocket)

I've seen plenty of the stuff he found, and there was a lot of it.

Just have to know where to look.

some day I'd like to get one for myself.
